I don't know much about Dream Theater. For Dragonforce, they win big points for talent instrumentally, but not as much for songwriting (part of it is a bit subjective because I think they are way too self-indulgent, but, also, a lot of their songs sound the same). Still, of what they do, they do well.

I'm not too familiar with Dragonforce...only heard a few tunes. instrumentally they are quite good but,

instrumentally Dream Theater may be the best band playing today. Portnoy is like a machine on drums, and Petrucci on guitar is one of the best players in the world. He was invited to play on the G3 tour with Satriani and Vai. Yes he's THAT good. and their songs, while indulgent at times and even preachy, deal with real world shit and not fantasy. Some songs deal with alcoholism, death, aging, symbolism, dreams, and order.

Dream Theater, not even a question about it.

Scenes from a Memory, Pt. 2 and Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence are evidence enough! Dragonforce is much too self-indulgent and shallow. They're fast to be fast; it's all very shallow at best. Dream Theater, especially with the examples I gave, at least tells a story and has much more artistic value.

At least Dragonforce is fun.

Dream Theater took the worst elements of prog and made a career out of it. Sure they are skilled musicians, but many of their elaborate constructions lack soul.

There are tons more interesting progressive metal/rock bands out there.
