Dragonball raped at the box office

There was one moment that was purer DB, when Goku let the jocks beat each other up entirely by evading, even if it wasn't done in clueless fun.

When it comes to fighting Son Goku is never clueless.

As to Goku leaving his family before GT, it was five years, and he was only supposed to leave for one, I believe, and more,

No, it was TEN years. 4 year old Pan to 14-year-old Pan; teen Goten/Trunks to late twenties Goten/Trunks, etc. etc. etc.

Toriyama seems eternally poised to write what 'actually happened' after the end of Z some day, and has more or less disowned GT, which he had no hand in.

:sighs:

Where do people get this s#*&!?

Toriyama did character designs for the characters of GT, that is Pan, SSJ4, etc. etc. So he DID have a hand in it.

Also, Toriyama did NOT disown GT, a quote from a convention: "GT turned out pretty okay."

And he'll never write "what actually happened at the end of Z", because he got tired of Dragon Ball long before Z ended. Dragon Ball was supposed to end with the death of Super Saiyan Goku finishing of Frieza and Namek exploding in his face. But the franchise was so successful, and fans wanted more, and studio executives wanted more money, so he was roped into doing another saga. Once more Dragon Ball was poised Son Goku's death, and the passing of the torch to his son. But just like before, the fans and greedy studio execs won't let it go, and once again, another saga was tacked on. And when the Buu saga was over, Toriyama said; "nope, uh uh, not again, no more, I'm through with Dragon Ball." Then the animation studio asked permission to continue GT on their own and roped him into doing character designs. He was pretty much sick of it, so he's not poised to do anything with Dragon Ball.

Mebbe someday, this will open the door for DB to get the HP/LOTR treatment. I do love DB, but trying to intro even 20% of that wacky world to a mass audience might well doom it. Let it take a decade or so to seep into the mass culture more.

?? What the hell are you talking about. The world is ALREADY introduced to a mass audience. Japan is a mass audience, Europe is a mass audience (in Poland it sparked a national the debate on whether animation was just for kids or for adults as well. Just like in Japan, in Mexico people took a day off work to make sure to watch Son Gohan achieving SSJ2 at the earliest opportunity.

Dragon Ball has already been introduced to mass audience everywhere and it worked just fine. There's no reason why it wouldn't be able to work again.

Not to detract from the DB discussion, but...

Hi! I'm a poster who does nothing but tear down other people's opinions in the most provocative, snarling way possible. I couldn't be talking about anyone here, could I?

I'm sorry, mods. Honestly. I know about feeding the flames, and the troll. But I've heard this contrarian-wannabe's crap far too often to let it go forever without saying just how little this particular poster contributes to any discussion of any subject. I can honestly say that venting this way is worth any trouble it buys me. After this, no more.

five minutes of the screen slowly panning over the still animation cels.
This is one of the reasons I'm not into Anime. Nevermind the research I'd need to do to even understand half of it, it's just not animated enough. And the whole laser-beam fight genre is pretty bad, imo.

This movie looks sort of like a Steven Seagal movie based on the trailers. So maybe so-bad-it's good?
If you haven't seen it I would recommend Cowboy Bebop, I would put it up among the best TV shows ever made. It's the only anime I've ever really liked.

"Flopped", yes.

"Bombed", yes.

Interesting choice of verb. And incorrect usage.

Downright disturbing choice of verb for some of us. Honestly, it's been a little uncomfortable coming in here, seeing it displayed so casually on the thread list like that. :(

It took me at least three minutes to figure out that TG Theodore and Ceridwen Troy were responding to the title of the thread, and not an actual post. I petition the mods to change the thread title and suggest this as the replacement:

Dragonball fisted at the box office

I offer Dragonball gangbanged at the box office.

The word choice is fine, it's a common colloquialism.

:wtf: Perhaps among those who haven't been or known anyone who's been harmed by the act...

Or perhaps because you can't avoid stepping on toes in this P.C. world.

Of course, chances are someone probably wouldn't say it directly to someone who they know has been raped. But, you can't tip-toe all day long just in case.

That's no way to live and I don't think anyone can be so high and mighty to say they do.

Add to that, overuse equals dilution. This is a verb/noun that should always be loaded, reserved for one person's pain or at most, the violation and destruction of an entire region by a particularly vicious invading force.

Amongst the pathologically insensitive, yeah.

Pathologically Insensitive, I like the phrase.
Its like those white libs who take out lawsuits to defend Native American Indians against those horrid Indian mascot names only to find out the Indians not only aren't offended they think it an honor.

Obviously the OP was being absurd in a humorous fashion and the PC among us got their shorts in a wad. I seriously doubt he's mocking what rape really is some around here need to grow a funny bone. Maybe at least a tolerance bone or 'blind eye' bone.

I still hold that overuse equals dilution, and more, even as a joke, its inaccurate. It wasn't attacked by another movie, after all, just its own shortcomings. I like 'Dragonball film sent to the next dimension', to use the infamous euphemism from the original English dub.

tr.v. raped, rap·ing, rapes

  2. To seize and carry off by force.
  3. To plunder or pillage.

Don't try to monopolize one definition of a word. There are multiple definitions, so getting upset when a person is obviously using another accepted definition dumbs down the English language, limits free speech, and makes people stupidier because they're no long aware of the other definitions. It reminds me of all the people who get uptight about the word "niggardly." Look it up before you make a fuss about what you don't know you're talking about.

Would saying "Dragonball killed at the box office" be better? Certainly people have known others that have been killed, and being killed can be (argued reasonably to be) worse than being raped.

My point is that the impact of words and language tend to fluctuate over time, and there's not much society can do about it except go with the flow. Just look at all the offensive words thrown around nonchalantly by today's rap lyricists.

Learn to listen/read the context of what another person is saying, instead of being distracted by a single word. Everyone's life will be less stressful that way.

(edit: sorry, I'm just tired of people policing my language :))

I guess I was wrong, not so much a colloquialism.

This is from the only friend I know that's seen it so far:
"it was interesting. i thought that it was going to be horrible and i was going to cry from 2 hours of my life being wasted, but it wasn't bad. it was pretty good. but i also think that the only people that like the movie are dragonball fans since [friend] and her boyfriend didn't seem to care for it. i'd say that you should go see it."

I don't think I'm going to see it anytime soon.
