Dragon Age - Discussion Thread

A new trailer has been released at Gamecom. Try and spot all the cameos from previous games!

According to the devs; *yes* that person standing on the right @1m:37s is who you think it is, but the one next to them in that same shot *isn't* who you might think it is....interesting...though honestly I would have liked that to have been a surprise in-game. :/

I have a pretty good idea who the shining figure is supposed to be and who comes screaming in from screen left right near the end. Up until now, I'd thought those two were the same person. Oh well! :D

Sorry about being cryptic. Didn't want to spoil anyone that read the post before clicking play!

Trailer is freaking awesome. And yeah, I think the person at 1:37 would have been better left off as a surprise  I also think I saw
Alistair
in there but It's hard to be sure, what with the non-shitty graphics and all

Shows how long it's been since I've played any Dragon Age as they only person I recognised was Morrigan and that was probably only because she was in the first trailer.

Mostly it's just Morrigan and Cullen. Varric & Bianca are in one blink and you'll miss it shot and of course Cassandra and the new companions are there throughout. If Alistar is in there I didn't spot him.

Oh and I think this is the first time we've heard Cole speak, yes?

More comedy hijinks from Bioware.

You know I think never really got what Orleasians were about until just now, because that was so very....Orleasian. Odd though that they went with a stern Victorian English style accent rather than French. It's almost like Mary Poppins got on one of those shows where people make confessional video diaries and vote each other off.

Wait... they retconned the accent? Jeez, Bioware, you really have to follow Star Trek's/Patrick Steward's lead on everything, don't you

After doing a bit of digging it seems as though she's not actually Orleasian but a Freemarcher of Rivaini decent, so that accent makes a bit more sense now.

One can only presume they came up with the former after they cast an English voice actor and the latter after they settled on her design. Regardless it is consistent with the way we've seen how circle mages get moved around from time to time. Presumably she was brought up in the circle of Kirkwall, Starkhaven or one of the other two who' names escape me before being moved to Montsimmard, perhaps when she qualified as an enchanter?

Yeah it looks like ME3's MP done as a dungeon crawl instead of horde mode. I really enjoyed ME3's so this could be good too. I just wish they'd call this PvE multiplayer rather than co-op. When I hear co-op I tend to think of campaign drop-in/drop-out.

I do wonder if that obfuscation is more for EA's benefit than ours. Just so they can say "yes boss, we put in the online co-op mode just like you asked, are you happy now?!" ;)

In other news I gather Solas has been confirmed as a LI but only for Elf Inquisitors. Interesting that they've never race-gated before now. You'd think it would have come up in DAO...but then I suppose the Warden was more likely to be prejudiced than any of the LI companions.

Apparently there's stil one more as yet unannounced, which means it's either Blackwall or Vivienne. While Blackwall is probably the more likely, Vivienne seems like she'd be the most interesting.

Oh yeah and in case anyone missed it, they've done a sneek peek at the current state of The Keep save generator.

Looks pretty, but I can't help feel disappointed that they've abandoned importing old saves in favour of starting from scratch. It'll take some doing to accurately recreate my 4 year old save file. :(

You know, for an earnings call with EA's shareholders, that sort of language might just work. ;)

The irony being that they'd have no idea what an "online co-op" even is, just that it had a big chunk of the pie-chart on the quarterly earnings report.

They've just put up a vid on the character creator and it looks to be by far the most comprehensive one Bioware has ever done.

On the down side, I'm not such a huge fan of how the Qunari horns and hairstyles are linked. I'd much rather pick them separately. Love that they've finally included colour pickers though!

Also, they did a steam of the CC and some gameplay on twitch last night and have already uploaded the recording.

No matter how much they improve their character customization they always seem to leave something out, in this case not separating horns and hairstyles. It also looked like they've still got beards and stubble linked when those should really be separated. Oh well, not a big deal in the grand scheme of things.

It does seem like a strange oversight, but I can only presume there's some technical reason behind it. Perhaps when you separate them it creates clipping issues?

Personally I'm a little disappointed that none of the horns have that elegant swept back multi-pronged look from DA2. On the female at least they tend to make the character look less unique and more reminiscent of an anime style succubi, which n turn makes it a little too close to the in-universe Desire Demons which they obvious inspired.

Aide from that though, I can't complain too much. It's miles better than anything we've had before!

I like that they're doing something rather similar to Skyrim's system. One of the main complaints of previous DA games is that they never quite got the loot systems to gel terribly well.

In DAO there was plenty of good armour pieces, but very little aesthetic variety and wearing mis-matched pieces would often look downright fugly. In DA2 they opted to address the fuglyness by locking the companion armour into iconic designs that you can just occasionally upgrade and by making sure that Hawke could get a matched set by the end of every act (except for some reason the last part of the act 2 armour was in act 3....because reasons?)

Voice options need more Peter Dinklage.

From what I'm hearing from Destiny players, The Dinklage ain't so hot that the voice-overs.

Well yeah, but it's not his fault, he was given a downright bad script. As Tycho from Penny Arcade put it,

Gabriel suggested that someone phoned it in for him, but I countered in the moment yesterday that phoning it in (whoever happens to have dialed) suggests that he didn’t care. I submit that he is reading this script with active, smoldering contempt which - if nothing else - suggests an expenditure of agency.

I very much doubt any regular posters in here wouldn't already have Dragon Age: Origins, but if you don't (or would like the PC version) EA is giving it away for free on Origin.
