Dr. Who New Series Premiere Episode Name

The TV21 comics published during the 1960s made an attempt to depict a Dalek society. True, it was a culture based upon war and the extermination of "lesser" species, but it was a culture. And continuing that concept is a talented digital modeler named MechMaster, who, using Cinema4D, has posted over 500 pages of a 3D comic story he calls "Second Empire".

He was clearly inspired by the TV21 comics, but he has built upon those ideas and sometimes branched in very unexpected directions. Most intriguing, his Daleks have character, even the lowest "drone". He presents them discussing the tedium of transport duty; he has them watching "cinema" (heavy on the propaganda, of course); he even has them playing cards! As absurd as that may read, when you see his visuals, you "buy" it.

Plus, MechMaster is kind enough to share a selection of his models with everyone who has the tools to import .OBJ format meshes.

How cool is that?!

Sincerely,

I have a vision in my head now of Daleks panicking and banging into each other in an attempt to get away...it possibly has the Benny Hill music playing over the top of it!

Put the Benny Hill music over Donna's Dance Party in "Journey's End" and you'd basically have that.

I, personally, don't hate "Victory of the Daleks." Not the best Who episode, ever, but certainly no "Fear Her" (which is the only nuWho episode I skipped on my recent re-watch of the series. Part of me want to watch it during the opening ceremonies of the Olympics, and part of me wonders why I'm such a masochist. But, I digress).

Yeah, "Victory of the Daleks" isn't great, but it isn't offensively awful, either. In any event, it un-fucked the Daleks and reestablished them as Being Out There, Doing Bad Things, so now any new episodes don't have to go through the hoops of the Daleks showing up because of "oh, no, some Daleks survived the Time War, what will we doooooooo" as a result of another ship fallen through time or hiding behind the moon or behind the sofa or what have you, so I can't hate it for that reason alone.

Wow, what a find! Thank you! I am thoroughly entertained.

I don't hate them either. I just wasn't fond of the way they were handled in RTD's era for precisely the reasons you gave. A billion daleks just suddenly turning up out of nowhere when they were supposed to be dead just got old fast. Threy work better when they're an established race like the Sontarans or Cybermen, and the group the Doctor encounters just a small mission up to no good. I've had quite enough THE FATE OF THE UNIVERSE HANGS IN THE BALANCE!!! stories thank you.

My only problem with Victory was some serious logic problems that spoiled it for me.

Let me caution you that MechMaster can and has thrown some absurdist curve-balls like, like... Well, shoot, I'd rather not spoil the silliness. And the operative word here is "silly". MechMaster does not take his material too seriously.

Okay, here's one that shouldn't ruin things too much. The Golden Emperor (derived from the 60s comics) trundles down a great hall depicting various travel machine casings the Daleks have tried throughout their history. The Emperor reflects how some of these variant designs were their greatest successes while others were their greatest failures. He thinks the latter as his eye-stalk aims at a group of "New Paradigm" shells. (Obviously, MechMaster was less than impressed with the design revealed in "Victory of the Daleks".)

Sincerely,

Bill

I dunno, using them in the season opener somewhat strikes me as getting them out of the way so Moffat can get on with doing what he wants to do for the rest of the series.

Steven Moffat came out on record when he took over from RTD to say he 'never quite knows what to do with the Daleks', and so having him as show runner AND writer of this opening episode does leave me a little worried.

I am thoroughly enjoying it. I'm about 200 pages in already.

Well if the rumours are true, as parts of the rights agreement with the Nation estate the Dalek's have to appear every season (and they appeared breifly last season).

You know, I have heard reliable people deny such a poilcy exists. But then, I can think of no other logical reason for why they brought Daleks in for such pointless scenes in The Waters of Mars and The Wedding of River Song than being contractually obligated to.

'cause Daleks are awesome?

No seriously, the appearance of the Dalek in "The Waters of Mars" clearly sets the stakes for the episode: if even a Dalek won't alter a fixed point in time, then it really must be bad for the Doctor to do it. Something similar for "The Wedding of River Song"-- where Moffat said he wasn't going to have a Dalek in the entire season until he sat down to write that exact scene.

No "contractual obligations" required.

The trouble is, until we have an entire series that doesn't feature a Dalek, not even in the slightest sense, then the rumour will persist, whether there's any legitimacy to it or not.

A series without Daleks? But what the hell is BBC going to stick in the promos? Yeah, I know they managed without Dalek promos in 2009, but the Dalek was all over the trailers for The Wedding of River Song, despite its one scene.

Plus there's the fact that every finale since the show returned has featured either Daleks or the Master. I guess if we went an entire series with no Daleks, that means the Master would be showing up in the finale.

BTW, season 7.1 starts on August 25th, with a five episode run. Then the Xmas special at Xmas, and 7.2 probably in late January for 8 episodes...

McIntee, if you weren't already a golden god for writing Sanctuary and First Frontier, you would be for sharing this news. I've had an utterly crap week and just knowing when the Doctor comes back really helps a lot. Thank you.

Not me; all that says to me is he's since thought of an idea of "what to do with the Daleks," so he's doing it.

Possible dumb question: do we know if BBC America will be airing it the same day as Britain?
They have done so for the last couple of years, so likelihood is yes, however, the following Saturday is Labor Day Weekend, so, they may delay it a couple of weeks, or show 1 episode, skip a week, then start up with the other 4, since they skipped Labor Day Weekend in Series 6

The Master doesn't come with a contractual obligation clause like the Daleks ;)

Errrr... last ONE year, no?

Hardly a trend.

Are you sure it wasn't 2 years?

I'm having a hard time remembering for sure, but it seems like longer since there was the weeks or months long delay.

It seems like TEOT was right away too, but again with the faulty memory thing, I could be wrong.

Labour Day didn't mean anything last year. Doctor Who aired a new episode in both the US and Canada (Night Terrors) that weekend. In fact, in Canada, Space took a break from its scheduled holiday weekend marathon to show it and the Miracle Day episode that aired that weekend.

The Master doesn't come with a contractual obligation clause like the Daleks ;)

But if there are no Daleks in the finale, then that means the Master's got to be in it. ;)

BBC America aired TEOT the day after each part aired in the UK. I believe there was a two week gap between UK boradcasts and North American broadcasts of S5. A Christmas Carol aired same day (Christmas day) in the UK and US, Boxing Day in Canada. UK, US, and Canada have been same day for everything starting with The Impossible Astronaut. It would be stupid to revert to having another delay, since the point of same day airing is to cut down on internet piracy.

I wonder if BBCA would consider streaming it in near-time for the die-hards and then schedule it as best for TV. I tend to download it so I can discuss it online in a timely manner and also not be spoiled.

Well You are always going to run the risk of being spolied, after all at best the discussion will be several hours old even if it airs on the same day in the states.

Last series they did a couple of cameos, not featured story. IIRC.
