Dr. Selar

Back on-topic, I've had a chance to think about Worf and Selar. I now kind of like the possibility of a romance between such opposites. After all, they hinted of a romance -- or at least, a deep friendship -- between Worf and Pulaski. So why not a Klingon and a Vulcan? A child of such a union would have more issues than Time magazine!

Also, back off-topic, has it ever been established that Vulcans are incapable of having sex except during pon farr? Perhaps a Vulcan married to a Klingon could have sex, as it's "logical" to engage in physical contact with one's mate to bring harmony to the marriage even when not in the mating season.

As for poor Geordi, imagine him being fixated on a Vulcan like Selar! Talk about striking out!

I still don't buy it. It's not just about how much they have sex - human/Vulcan pairings have that issue too. It's also how violent Klingons are vs how calm Vulcans are. Klingons go through rituals using pain sticks, Vulcans spend a significant amout of their free time meditating. Klingons play games involving a lot of physical contact. Vulcans play 3-D chess and Kaltow.

It's interesting that you bring up "issues" a child of such a union would have. Sometimes I think that is why these types of pairings seem appealing to people. Not because they are realistic possibilities between compatable people, but because we love seeing others have more problems in their relationships than we do!

Seriously, a Klingon/Vulcan romance would be a recipe for failure. I think that is why some people love it, but as a Vulcan would put it, it would be "most illogical". :vulcan:

^ "Most" is the mot juste here, I'd say! The theme of "opposites attract" is way overused in TV and movies.

I don't see a Worf/Selar pairing as workable, even though I concede that a Klingon/Vulcan pairing in the abstract isn't out of the question. My main reason for opposing the pairing is Worf's background. Vulcans look like Romulans. I just don't see Worf being able to love someone who looks like the people who killed his family.

Also, back off-topic, has it ever been established that Vulcans are incapable of having sex except during pon farr?
T'Pol wasn't in pon farr when she jumped Trip in "Harbinger".

^ Ah ha! That was my dim recollection too - I haven't seen that episode, but I thought I remembered somebody mentioning it. And then there was that time Spock had whatever relationship he had with that Romulan commander in "The Enterprise Incident" (they're kind of coy about it, of course) - he wasn't in pon farr then either. Whatever he did off camera, it was apparently enough to convince her!

Who knows what turns Vulcans on? We do know they control their emotions, as Vulcan emotions appear to be even more intense than human emotions -- witness the Romulans, and how Spock acts in All Our Yesterdays. I'd say the scene in The Enterprise Incident shows that Vulcans must have a different kind of sexuality, related to the mind. Perhaps that's why Spock and other Vulcans don't like mind-melding that much -- it's a kind of intimacy that may be sexual to them. -- RR

Fortunately for Troi, the Worf thing didn't last long. Marrying Worf has been shown to be a direct path to Stovokor.
