Don't suppose there's a chance season two will be a visual re-reboot.

I can't un-see Donald Trump in space. Thanks a lot.

On another note: I'm very glad they didn't go with "The Cage" Look for Discovery. Seeing it drives it home.

Why a half-century old mainstream sci-fi franchise like Star Trek would bother copy/pasting the aesthetics of something so niche as Mass Effect ? If there are similarities between the two, that's because ME is the franchise influenced by Trek, not the other way around...

Far be it for me to defend using the ME style..but...it’s not exactly niche. Nor is it influenced by Trek, except indirectly. It’s more like Babylon 5, and it’s visual style is heavily influenced by Final Fantasy Spirits Within. That’s where all the glowey 3D interface stuff is coming from, as well as a ton of other stuff in ME. Video games are no longer niche, it’s a multi billion insert currency of choice here industry. ME is slightly less niche than Trek at this point. (And I don’t even like ME particularly. I like the idea of it, but never could finish them.)

Not a chance it changes. They have too much money invested in this look.

Discovery's bridge was wasn't that dark.

People keep brining that up but most of the time there was light.

Videogames aren't more popular than Movies or Television. It is true that the gaming industry profits more. That doesn't mean people play as much videogames as they watch TV or go to the cinema. It just means games are more expensive and attract people with slightly higher acquisitive power.

Besides, Mass Effect never had massive sales like other videogame franchises. It's something tailored for aficionados of Action RPGs. The "Average Joe" doesn't know anything about ME. And I really doubt gamers who use consoles primarily as "COD/FIFA Machines" really know much about stuff like ME. Star Trek, on the other hand, is a Pop Culture icon that almost everybody knows about, for decades. Even if you aren't into it, you probably are familiar with elements like Spock, the Enterprise, etc. ME sounds very niche when compared to ST.

I'm not saying that ME or Babylon 5 plagiarized Trek, however, if you're doing a Space Opera with interspecies diplomacy elements, it's quite certain you were influenced by Trek somehow. The aesthetic may have been influenced by other materials, but ME's ethos is very Trek-ish.

I’m glad to be in Treks corner here, but I have definitely seen more media in the general, press, advertising etc, dedicated to ME in the last few years than Trek, so it’s just a general feeling I get...plus it’s influence designwise is definitely felt in the genre.

The best we can hope for is some consoles and displays somewhat resembling TOS and any pullover tunics having a passing similarity to the ones seen in "The Cage." Frankly, the actual shirts but sewn with modern fabric and with better insignia and rank braids would be just fine but we all know they won't bother doing that. Old isn't necessarily synomynous with bad or even terrible, and if you recreated the tunics from the first pilot with a modern feel they'd still work. It's not about the design, it's about the execution.

People keep brining that up but most of the time there was light.

I wonder how many people forget the times Voyager used "red alert" as an excuse for dramatic lighting. I think I've seen that bridge set on "red alert" more often than normal lighting, especially in later seasons.

If you're going to be looking out into pitch-black space and be looking at illuminated consoles and graphics displays, you need it dark.

There's a reason you don't drive around at night with your interior lights on.

The sickbay was blaring bright, and the corridors, crew quarters, and engine room all had nominal lighting. The "dark lighting" complaint is one of the dumbest, most overplayed hater cards in the deck.

I think the main reason for that is because CBS/Paramount handled Star Trek advertising in a very apathetic manner in the last few years... They're happy to simply let ST's Pop Culture status do half of the job for them.

Wait, a desire for more light on-set is a "hater card" now? Good lord. Don't be so defensive.

Perhaps I should have chosen my words more carefully. I'll rephrase.

It seems to be a go-to cliche for those wishing to provide a list of constructive criticisms regarding the show. And on a list of things that actually matter, I'd expect it to be rather low...but it seems it's not.
