Donny's TOS Enterprise Interiors

Hey Donny, made an account to just mention how fantastic your work is on STO. Those bridges look great! Quick question - Are they planning on doing more upgrades on the game engine?

Just finished skimming through all 116pgs of this thread (mainly to look at renders) - absolutely amazing work, have been a longtime fan of Basil's and glad there others out there who are doing the same kind of stuff (it's like stepping through the Guardian of Forever and going back to 1983, or even further with some of the TOS stuff). :techman: :techman: :techman: :techman:

Look forward to seeing more, including the TOS Engineering Section whenever you get around to it!

Re: TOS Enterprise Interiors -- Unreal 3 Engine

#8 looks like a set of Raney Scalp Clip-Applying Forceps

I think the practical purpose of these set decorations was to provide Khan some weapons that were naively unattended in the 23rd century with which he could threaten McCoy. Beyond this actual practical purpose, McCoy is probably just a bit of a collector. I don't see the practical purpose, for that matter, of having a bunch of skulls scattered throughout Sick Bay--in the glass cabinet and, later, on the shelves of his office--or the books and brain model he has in his cabin. (Haven't they invented e-book readers in the 23rd century yet?) Actually, I think a lot of physicians collect and display old medical instrumentation--my father-in-law the nephrologist for example.

I don't think McCoy hid the antique display away post-Khan. But he was probably smart enough to put them safely under unbreakable glass. I guess they might look kind of creepy to some. To me they just look like a bunch of medical instruments. But I don't know if I would put them in a tight booth right next to people who are waiting for some kind of medical service.

For those who are interested:

1. Simpson-Braun Obstetrical Forceps (Left Half)
2. Simpson-Braun Obstetrical Forceps (Right Half)
3. Hudson Brace (Cloward Brand)
4. Israel Retractor (Four Prongs, Blunt)
5. Mathieu Needle Holder
6. Welch-Allyn Otoscope
7. Langenbeck retractor 3/8" x 1 1/4" blade
8. Unknown (still researching--but I'll find it eventually)
9. Bistoury Knife
10. Scalpel with #23 Blade
11. Liston Amputation Knife

In the end, I think it makes more sense to show users of this video game something that's interesting and with which they are familiar, rather than just an Exercise Machine computer display when there is simply an identical display over in the room next door that they can look at--even if there is some justification that we can concoct to have one of these readouts in the Sixck Bay Ward Room without its associated Exercise Machine. I wouldn't be too concerned with how these antiques will make the fictional patients of the fictional Dr. McCoy's feel when they see these old instruments hanging on the walls of the fictional Sick Bay Ward Room.

Edit: I think patients probably watch all the numerous ship's theater performances on their bedside swing-arm monitors, rather than have to climb out of bed and hobble over to watch it on a monitor in the corner of the room. But maybe I'm overthinking it.

Cool! Is this an update or a redo? And welcome back!
Well, I've always wanted to go back and work on my TOS stuff, but some of it is looking rather dated now. So currently I'm going through and updating some of the materials and meshes so they're better looking and more optimized, using techniques and tools I've learned since I last touched those sets (2-3 years now? Geez. Where has the time gone? Oh yeah...life).

However, since I've been working at Cryptic, my energy to work on personal projects comes and goes, so I just strike whenever the iron is hot, and my iron is definitely hot for some TOS goodness right now. :D

An excellent choice to pour some of your energies into! :techman:

EDIT:
In hi-res, you really see how mistreated that poor plaque is!

Even more, if you figure that plaque's been there since the ship was launched in 2245.
The plaque was absent from the bridge in The Cage, so it's safe to say it was either displayed elsewhere or not created until closer to its appearance in WNMHGB.

Looking gorgeous!

BTW, what dimensions did you get for Kirk's bed? I had a brief discussion with Lora Johnson a few months ago (http://www.trekbbs.com/threads/shane-johnson-mr-scotts-guide-to-the-enterprise.281282/page-7) and she seemed certain that the scale board she'd used was correct - which would place Kirk's bed at around 5' wide by 10' long. The screencaps seem to suggest something more conventional though (maybe 4' wide).

What did you find/settle on?

She said in her reply to you, though, that when she took those measurements, the mattress and upholstery were gone from the bed, so she was measuring the frame. Looking at this screencap of Captain Styles when he gets called to the bridge, he's laying along the forward edge of the bed, and there's a TON of space to his left. I could believe that once you take away the wedge-shaped upholstery you'd be left with a mattress that's about 4-1/2' to 5' wide.

I don't remember how exactly I came up with the figures, but I just checked my in-game measurements. The mattress and cushions themselves come out to be 4.5 feet wide by 8.5 feet long, the frame itself being roughly 5 feet wide by 10 feet at it's longest point.
