Donny's TOS Enterprise Interiors

Glad things are working out so well at your new job, Donny!

Have you had a chance to pick up the new blu-ray of the TWOK Director's Cut? The new 4K remaster is gorgeous and corrects the bluish tint that the previous remaster had. (I promise, I'm not trying to relitigate that old discussion!)

Thats looks about 99% Screen Accurate to me :) Someday I'll have to save $ and get a uniform from them as in RL I kinda sorta look like a younger Capt. Batesman aka Fraiser in Starfleet uniform ^_^
IIRC, to be 100% screen accurate, the insignia has to be 2-piece. The bronze arrowhead with circle was the same for both enlisted and officer personnel. The bar was added as a backing to the arrowhead for officers.

There was one scene in one of the TOS movies (can't recall which one at present) where the arrowhead was slightly off-center and canted at a slight angle in relation to the backing piece. Probably got knocked or something. There may be a reference to this in Fletcher's manual on the design, can't remember, but that one scene proved to me that it was definitely a 2-piece set-up.

Does it matter if it's 1-piece and looks good? Hell no! :D

I just bought it this weekend! Yes, the picture quality is outstanding, and after going through all my map files this weekend, I definitely feel a re-light is in order. Luckily, my materials and textures aren't tinted blue, so it's just a matter of adjusting the lighting.

Mine is a two piece, glued together.

Anyway, finishing up the corner of Kirk's cabin. Just got to get the knickknacks in there.

Lora Johnson (formerly Shane Johnson) may be posting pictures of the circular booth in the corner sometime soon. When she visited the sets in the 80s for research for Mr Scott's Guide, she took a bunch of pictures (some in a rudimentary 3D fashion). We've talked to her over in the Trek Tech forums, and hopefully when she gets a scanning method worked out she can provide us with images of these sets as they existed after STIV but before TNG. AFAIK, the circular dining booth in Kirk's cabin was never seen, so this will be a great opportunity to bring that detail to life!

Awesome work Donny, as always. The Adventure Continues. ;)

Could you tell me please, for those labels on the communications station (both the wall monitor controls & the glowing console), did you fill any of those in with some arbitrary designations, or did the new enhanced blu-ray give you some better insight into those texts? Better yet, were you able to previously obtain more definitive behind-the-scenes imagery? Those labels and graphics are pretty much where I stopped dead cold on my 3D version of that set. You've clearly nailed those few words I was able to make out on the wall controls from TWOK, but those texts on the glowing console were nearly impossible to discern. It just left me stuck in the mud, and I eventually lost my mojo.

What's really neat to me though... I've been under the impression all this time (from my limited references), that those "orange-spectrum arc keys" on the console were simply labeled with large circled letters (in TMP anyway). But I have to say, the use of the departmental logos is a very good choice, if it wasn't in fact what was already used in actual production (and even then, it's a good choice ;) ). As to the translucent wedgie-door-stop buttons, I've never been able to make out much about how they were labeled.

Again, great work! :D

Unfortunately, no, the new TWOK Director's Cut Blu-Ray did not offer any more clarity to either the console or the screen above. So I basically just filled in the blanks, which I hate doing, but I've learned not to let myself get too hung up on things so that I can keep progressing. Also, if any new clear reference becomes available, I can easily make a change in the Photoshop files. The screen above the console is mostly accurate (from what I can tell) with the exception of the top left corner. I could make out either "CENTRAL COMPTS" or "OPTICAL COMPTS", and I chose to go with the former. Everything else was guesswork in that corner. Even the Enterprise Flight Manual's pages for Kirk's Quarters Console didn't have much in the way of anything to clarify that specific panel.

The console, on the other hand, was COMPLETE guesswork. While I doubt those "orange-spectrum arc keys" actually did have the departmental logos, I felt it was the most logical choice of what I could quickly use there, and it makes sense if Kirk quickly needs to get in touch with the head of the various departments aboard ship, or pull up the status of each. The text above and below each of the translucent keys was a complete fabrication, with stuff like "PWR ON", "MEM CHECK" and other things I basically stole from various other consoles and greebles around the bridge.

Again, I hate making up stuff and I'd much rather find accurate reference, but what can you do?

Basill, btw, you should check out this thread over at the Trek Tech section. Lora Johnson (formerly Shane Johnson) is answering questions about the making of Mr. Scott's Guide. It's been fascinating!

Oh, I hear ya there. It almost makes you feel like a traitor to the cause, but you have to fill it with something eh? Yeah, that's part of what stole my thunder (among other things) earlier this year, but I'll probably get back to some modeling things later, as the summer drags on. Again, good call on the logo approach. Quick department head access was exactly what I was thinking of, once I recognized what you'd pasted on there. :D

Thanks. Yeah, I've been peeking in there occasionally when I've been spared a brief moment, but I haven't had enough time to sit and read from beginning to end. Mr. Scott's Guide to the Enterprise has been one of my ALL TIME favorite Trek guides since it first came out (I was even able to get Jimmy Doohan to sign the title page at one of my first conventions, years before he passed away). And to read even a tiny bit of Lora Johnson's story about her struggles is especially endearing to me. :)

I've got Mr. Doohan's autograph on that page and Andrew Probert's on the schematic page!

Thanks for the link Donny! I'm following the thread with interest.

One of my prize possessions is a 1st Edition Franz Joseph Tech Manual with James Doohan's autograph on the inside back cover, and Montgomery Scott's autograph on the title page.

Hey Donny, Nick/Tacofangs told me on twitter that you made that
JJ Connie bridge
for the new mission in STO, great work!

I'm assuming he meant you anyways.

Yep, that's me! Upon arriving at Cryptic, my first task was to build what we are now calling the "Kelvin-Timeline" Constitution Class Bridge. It was a learning experience for sure, as I only had two weeks, which wasn't enough time to put in as much detail as I'm used to! It came out pretty good though. My bosses are happy, so that meant a lot to me. Hopefully players like it as well.

Even with the limited graphics budget I think it looks amazing. Can't wait to see the rest of your work, here and there

So does that mean you've done the first K-line Klingon bridge? (Did they show one in STID?)

As far as I know, yes. This is the first imagining of a Kelvin-timeline Klingon bridge However, it should be noted that our amazing concept artist, Hector Ortiz, developed the concept for it.
