Donny's TOS Enterprise Interiors

Re: Donny's TOS Enterprise Interiors

Silly question you may have already answered, Donny, but if it's something you've already built in the previous engine, can it be dropped into the new engine and modified or do you basically have to start from scratch?

It's best, and more fun, if I start from scratch. For several reasons:

There is a scale difference between Unreal 3 and Unreal 4. While I could just simply adjust the scale of the models, it's best to rebuild, rounding things off to the nearest grid unit of the game engine I'm currently working with. The more I can snap angles, vertices, etc to the grid, the easier it is to arrange the models in-engine.

Also, after reviewing my previous work (which is 2 years old at this point), I've noticed several inaccuracies in measurements. My modeling skills have also vastly improved, so a complete rebuild will result in a better looking and far more optimized end product.

It would actually be more of a headache to try and retrofit everything. And, after two years, I'm looking forward to tackling the engine room, officers lounge, and officers quarters again with all the new skills I've learned.

Still deciding what's next though. Maybe I'd like to get a smaller area out of the way before tackling engineering. Sickbay took two months. I'd like to work on something I can knock out in a couple of weeks.

Well, the Bridge is still missing an airlock in the back. Looks small enough you could knock it out in a week or so.

Good idea, but last night I actually spent the evening collecting references and reviewing some recently unearthed Torpedo Bay schematics. So, I think I've settled on that as my next mission. :techman:

Re: Donny's TOS Enterprise Interiors

Tell me about Unreal 4. Is it mainly modeling software, or what's all it do? Do you render these in Unreal 4 also?

It's a video game engine. It has a powerful editor, and it runs in real time. As you can see from the pictures, it's pretty advanced.

It is not a modelling software at all. It's a game engine, and in it you arrange all assets (models, textures, materials, audio, etc) to be rendered in real-time.

I use 3ds Max to build all my 3D geometry, btw.

Re: Donny's TOS Enterprise Interiors

Say! You know, when you're done with this, you may as well make the Klingon bridge from TMP.... I'm just sayin'....

Re: Donny's TOS Enterprise Interiors

I was thinking the same thing, too. And then he can use the helm console from the Klingon bridge for the Regula One transporter room... ;)

Re: Donny's TOS Enterprise Interiors

Looking good! So is this going to be torpedo bay 4? ;)

What's the plan for that anyway?

Ack. Without opening up a huge debate, this will be Torp Bay 2 with Torp Bay 1 (identical to this one, but flipped) just to starboard of this one. This realistically would not fit within the confines of the hull structure, but it's the only way IMO to reconcile the signage we see on-screen.

Torp Bays 3 and 4? Well, we're going to pretend those just don't exist, or that you just can't access them in my little virtual walkthrough here.

I almost wish that I didn't know that the Enterprise torpedo bay was a redress of the Klingon bridge. Whenever I rewatch TWOK or TSFS now, the Klingon design elements just pop out at me and take me out of the movie.

I knew it the first moment I saw it in TWOK. The shock absorber things screamed "redress!"
