Donny's TOS Enterprise Interiors

Re: Donny's TOS Enterprise Interiors

This photo perfectly exemplifies what drives me crazy about the movie era stuff. This piece of equipment does not look like it belongs in the Star Trek universe to me. It looks less advanced then TOS. I'm sure it has been discussed here ad nauseam but the fact that the movie technology seemed to be less advanced with less capability then TOS has always made me feel that the movies are a totally different Trek; not an extension of TOS.

My feelings about the movies of course does not reflect on the beautiful work that Donny is doing which is quite amazing. Your skill, speed, dedication and accuracy is nothing short of amazing. I always look forward to your posts!

Well, that item wasn't built for TMP, it was made for the Star Trek (Phase) II show and certainly looks clunky compared to some of the stuff designed for TMP. I'm not defending all the TMP tech, but the mix-n-match or leftover and stock props in TWOK and forward did tend to make everything look less sophisticated,

What's really funny is that one is readily visible within the Botany Bay's cargo-carrier camp on Ceti Alpha V. This would imply that it actually was TOS tech left behind by the Enterprise as an aid to Khan and his followers in their new establishment. The design's addition in TWOK seems retroactive of course, but perhaps it was some spare, yet state of the art, survival kit tech, stored away in Kirk's cargo bays. Maybe his crew had yet to utilize it prior to "Space Seed," but since then, the equipment has served well and seems warn and tired some "15 years" later. Naturally, we never saw any of that during the remainder of TOS's run. ;)

Re: Donny's TOS Enterprise Interiors

^^^ The more glaring example of anachronistic props was the broken arrowhead insignia around Khan's neck. We're supposed to infer this might have come from Marla McGivers as a memento after her death by eel, but it is clearly a TWOK-era belt buckle. It never would have existed in that time for Khan to ever have gotten a hold of it in the first place.

I think sometimes you just have to take a step back and not try and ret-con every tiny piece of detail with an 'in universe' explanation.

Well, the obvious explanation is that the dramatic recreation just got certain historical details wrong. Like MASH or Happy Days or Baa Baa Black Sheep. :techman:

Re: Donny's TOS Enterprise Interiors

^^^ Especially something as in-your-face as that insignia thing around Khan's neck.

Anachronistic generic background set pieces is one thing - barely noticeable and generally irrelevant. They could all easily be explained away by a simple "they could have always had that, just never seen on-screen". The existence of the TMP-style cargo containers that Khan's people were in was another good example. Since we never saw TOS-Enterprise's cargo holds, they may have always looked that way and had been a Federation standard design for decades before and after TOS w/ no real evidence to support or refute.

A major costuming choice on a primary character contingent to the plot whose on-screen existence is completely out-of-time by almost 20 years? Quite another thing entirely. Sure the majority of the non-Trekker fan movie-going audience couldn't have cared less, but at age 12 when I first saw it in the theater with my dad, even I knew it was wrong back then!

Sorry Donny - don't mean to derail your amazing thread. I absolutely love TWOK and what you've done here, but the film itself obviously has some small problems.

Hey, it's all good. I enjoy all these off-track discussions!

Re: Donny's TOS Enterprise Interiors

Hey Donny, on what are you basing the light fixture above the desk in the sickbay ward? Is it in some shots I've forgotten or behind the scenes photos I've missed?

Nothing concrete. It's just speculation that a light would be there.

Re: Donny's TOS Enterprise Interiors

So, on the actual set the beams might just go right to the wall?

Re: Donny's TOS Enterprise Interiors

Remembering my original planned layout of sickbay, I went ahead and constructed the opposite intensive care ward tonight, as well as modelling a chair for the desk. You'll see I'm taking the opportunity to use a darker, bluer lighting scheme for this ward:

Re: Donny's TOS Enterprise Interiors

just like klingon foreheads, it always looked like that. the "TOS" look is a limitation of 1970s television, not reality. :bolian:

Re: Donny's TOS Enterprise Interiors

I like it, with the subtly different lighting. Just curious -- the center cluster of rooms (lab, office, exam/surgery) aren't symmetrical, so you've got a little extra space to work with in the 'blue' ward. Any ideas?

It's such a small space, that I can only imagine it being a storage area.

However, I'm considering putting a door where bed number 17 is that would lead to other areas deeper in the sickbay complex. Or perhaps another door within the service corridor.
