Donny's TOS Enterprise Interiors

Re: Donny's TOS Enterprise Interiors

Let's please not do this again, kennysmith. This thread contains my progress on the Enterprise as seen in both TOS and the first three TOS movies (both the same ship, after all). I prefer to keep my work on both of these versions of the ship in this one thread. When and if I start working on the pre-refit version again, you will see its progress continue here as well.

I know you prefer the pre-refit version, but let's please stay on topic with recent progress and not bad-mouth the beautiful Refit Enterprise, shall we?

Thanks, Kenny.

Re: Donny's TOS Enterprise Interiors

I have a real big question for you all here?, do you know what is the real ncc1701? Is and I am not talking about the DUM movie as in veger or any of the newer one like the voyage home or any one of them. The real one is from the year of 1966 to 1968 TOS.

Nothing unreal exists. Moving on...

Just some thoughts. I've been wondering about the necessity of having two of those pole monitors in such a tight space, given the (now) pretty much established fact that it was a mobile unit. So, I went back and looked at some of my references.

While the monitor is visible in the cut Chekov exam scene, so are the greebles above the grid screen. However, I found this shot of a makeup moment on De Kelley while he's wearing his white coat, and not only are the greebles missing, in fact, so is some of the wall paint! :wtf:

This would appear to be roughly the same shooting time frame (if not the same day) that the Peter Preston death scene was filmed: White coat, incomplete set elements, and there is apparently no pole monitor in the corner. At this time it was probably the same one seen near the entryway, especially since some of the completed shots were filmed from low in that same corner (though the entire wall could be wild for all I know).

I also found one of those collectible card picture scans (though it is barely a thumbnail) which reveals a slightly different angle of Scotty's nephew meeting his end. McCoy dons his white coat, and the fried nephew is clearly identifiable. And though the grid screen is out of frame here, the wall mounted consoles are fully visible, but there is no sign of the mobile monitor.

When we look at the Chekov exam though, the monitor is stuffed into a corner, McCoy is coat free, and the set appears to be more complete.

Possible conclusion: Different shooting day after the paint has had a chance to dry? Maybe Nicholas Meyer wanted something more colorful there in the background and moved the monitor over on its convenient little wheels? :D

I find it hilariously ironic that after the set was finished, the one (presumable) scene they filmed there never made it into the movie, but one of the most poignantly memorable scenes was filmed when set production hadn't yet polished all the details.

Oh well, just thought I'd share. Continue with the awesome Donny!

Re: Donny's TOS Enterprise Interiors

Basill, thanks for this! I love that the card you posted gives me a little relief. I was pretty sure that both panels next to the hooded wall monitor were indeed flat and flush with the wall, but was afraid that something would be unearthed that would show otherwise.

Also, I think you're correct about there only being one mobile monitor-on-a-stick. It really wouldn't be necessary for there to be more than one in this room.

The question now, however, is whether or not I put the greebles back above the transulcent panel. Since the greebles are only seen in a scene that was in fact cut from the film, and the scene that stayed in TWOK has the greebles missing, I think it's safe to leave them off.

Plus it will save me some work. ;)

Re: Donny's TOS Enterprise Interiors

Great ongoing work, Donny!

Needed TOS sets:

Auxiliary Control Room ("The Changeling", "The Doomsday Machine", "The Way to Eden")
Forward Phaser Control ("Balance of Terror", "Mirror, Mirror")
Ship's Theatre ("The Conscience of the King")
Airlock-to-space (never seen)
22-man Evac Transporter Room (never seen... in canon, but confirmed in Whitfield's TMOST)
Cargo Transporter Room / Cargo Hold (never seen, but strongly implied, especially in TAS)
Jefferies Tube
Fuel Flow Access Crawlway Entrance Hatch Room ("That Which Survives")
Matter-Antimatter Intermix Control Room in Engineering (Eng4 Watkins died here in "That Which Survives")
Emergency Manual Monitor in Engineering ("Mirror, Mirror", "By Any Other Name", "The Immunity Syndrome")
Ship's Armory ("Day of the Dove")
Ship's Computer Lab ("Day of the Dove")
Officer's Quarters / Crew Quarters

Needed TMP sets:
Ship's large Rec Deck (TMP)
Airlock (TMP)
Auxiliary Control Room (Why wouldn't the TMP Enterprise / Enterprise-A have one?)
Bridge-Level Docking Airlock (Chekov greeted Spock here in TMP)
Officers' Quarters / Crew Quarters

I wonder what a TMP-era briefing room would look like... or a TMP-era Jefferies Tube...

Re: Donny's TOS Enterprise Interiors

It may not be so much that the set isn't "finished" but that sections of that wall are "wild" and they hadn't put the overhead piece back in at the time that the photo was taken of De getting his makeup touched up. (They might not have been shooting an angle that included it.)

Re: Donny's TOS Enterprise Interiors

Apropos of nothing, I saw this screen cap again today, and I'm wondering if those weren't originally in one of the Enterprise sets. I suppose they could have been rented.
The chairs?
Yes, the chairs.

When I get around to making the Refit Enterprise brig, I am heavily drawing from the security section seen in TSFS, chairs and all.

I have ideas for the briefing room in the works, but as far as a TMP-era Jefferies Tube....

Nice.

Sorry if I missed it but what graphic did you end up using for those colored hexagons?

Re: Donny's TOS Enterprise Interiors

^^ Curious about that too.

About the greebles about the screen: What if they move, garage-door-like, to expose the diagnostic sensors above the bed?

I lifted the graphic directly from a screencap. It looks good far away, but is fuzzy when you get up-close. Meh. It works for now.

Re: Donny's TOS Enterprise Interiors

I think I have an idea of what it might be - if you take the front view schematic of the refit Enterprise, cut it at around the centerline of the secondary hull and again just above the neck, rotate it and then mirror it, it kind of looks like the picture in question, like so...

Perhaps?

Either way, it feels like a Rorschach test!

You know, that's not too far off.

I'd forgotten about that site. Well, one thing that's very clear from it is that in TMP the chairs in Bones's office had backs which only came up to about waist height. You can see one in this shot and both of them in the reflection in the glass (link).

Am I imagining it, or are those the same chairs (painted silver) seen in TSFS's security section?

I don't think so. The ones in the TMP version of McCoy's office have slightly higher backs.

Either way, those chairs seen in the TMP shots have been replaced by ones with much higher backs in TWOK...

Something else it might be is Southwest/Mexican/Spanish tiles. Well a negative of a photo of them anyway.

Re: Donny's TOS Enterprise Interiors

Sorry no updates for a few days. Not only have I been having to deal with Mardi Gras parades at my real job, but my sickbay map file was corrupted and it took a couple days to track down the problem. Luckily, problem is now solved and I can continue work. There was a pesky normal map that was causing the editor to crash. Not sure why. Intensive Care Ward images coming tomorrow, hopefully!
