Modified the bed just a tad and also got the sensor/light cluster above the bio-bed built.

Well, except these was clearly some overhead scanner-bar which moved across the Ilia probe, casting a shadow on her. :)

My thought was that the "shadow" was just the sensor/light cluster doing its thing; I never assumed there was a physical bar there.

That's what I thought. And since there is no canonical evidence of what resides "up there", I guess it's up to interpretation. For the sake of momentum, my version stays for now

There's a light on her and something occludes it, casting a shadow. It could be a bar in an overhead gizmo like Donny's created, but there's still something there blocking the light. You can't project dark, after all. :)

Another observation. While building the Phase II Bed Monitor that is seen in these two scenes, I started guessing what kind of base the poles holding the monitor up would be attached to. You can see just a little bit of the base in the picture with Kirk walking through the intensive care ward.

I opened up my Quicktime files of the TNG sickbay from the Interactive TNG Techinical Manual, and noticed that what we see of the base (underneath the mylar sheets) looks very similar to these "supply carts" floating around the TNG sickbay:

Interesting find, and it would possibly explain this photo I found on TrekCore of McCoy operating on Chekov after they get back to the Enterprise:

Your find with the little cart could explain why the medical monitor isn't flat against the wall anymore. Also curious that the textured translucent panel suddenly has what appear to be noticeable seams, whereas in the earlier Peter Preston scene it looked like a single pane.

OH DAMN. Nice find. Since we never see this corner in the Peter Preston scene, I'm guessing that there were in fact two of these monitors in the examination room. Once by the door Kirk enters/exits through and one in this corner.

[EDIT] ALSO!! The greebles from TMP above the translucent panel have re-appeared.

Makes me wonder about what else was cut from the final film that would aid me in my quest.

A quick blocking-out of the monitor w/stands shows how well the addition of these props really fills out the room, and makes it appear more utilitarian and busy, like a medical lab should.

Apropos of nothing, I saw this screen cap again today, and I'm wondering if those weren't originally in one of the Enterprise sets. I suppose they could have been rented.

Heh. I wondered if you were gonna do the "monitor on stick" as I've always referred to it. Figures, being TWOK and all. Nice connection on the dolly cart too.

I love the cut-scene McCoy/Chekov shot. I have that in my files somewhere but it's considerably smaller. I think the tiny version I have was scanned from a bubble-gum collectible card or some such.

As to the "seams" in the transluscent grid... I can't say for certain, but there is the possibility that is just some visual artifact: the highly distorted impression of structures and objects on the other side being seen through the grid panel. It's obvious in the actual TWOK screen shots that there is something on the other side, but it is even more apparent from this rare cut-scene perspective. The grid appears far more refractionary from this angle as well, much more so than I ever realized.

BTW, those "carts" are of the Joe Colombo designed "B-Line Boby Trolley" family (link), and can still be bought. The ones used in TNG sickbay are the 3-rack by 3 drawer type, which are 73.5cm tall. All of them are 43cm wide and 42cm deep. It's difficult to tell if the ones in the TWOK set are the 3 rack ones, but it seems likely. You can "build your own" on the site to get the dimensions of all the different heights, or you can just go to the Boby "home (link) and see all the possible dimensions in one go.

    Hope that helps. :)

That helps immensely! And it makes me happy to know that I wasn't too far off on the dimensions either (my original calculations were 48 cm wide by 77 cm tall, which I thought was a little too large anyway)

Also, I had a "Eureka!" moment when I made this connection: The tops of the Boby trolley carts are seen elsewhere in the TMP sets, further affirming my suspicion that the monitors are indeed connected to these types of carts!

Blocked out the cart today (it's still missing wheels and drawers). I'm gonna make this 23rd century version one piece instead of the stack-able modular design, and implement a flat top surface instead of the segmented top we see on the actual Boby. I'll probably build a version with the top drawer slid out to reveal McCoy's medical tools inside.

Really glad we've solved this one!

I have a real big question for you all here?, do you know what is the real ncc1701? Is and I am not talking about the DUM movie as in veger or any of the newer one like the voyage home or any one of them. The real one is from the year of 1966 to 1968 TOS.
