Donny's TOS Enterprise Interiors

Re: Donny's TOS Enterprise Interiors

Slowly starting work on the Transporter Room. We don't see much of the room in TWOK or TSFS, but we see enough to know that it is basically the same as what we saw in TMP. There are some minor differences, however, as demonstrated below:

Here, you see this greebly-filled wall is one solid color, which is a slightly metallic grey (colored purple due to stage lighting):

But in TWOK and TSFS, some of the crevices and details of the wall were painted a slightly darker shade of metallic grey, with lighting more on the blue side:

Here is my rendition of this wall:

Lighting is not yet complete, of course.

The texture, color and lighting look spot-on, and I admire your attention to detail! Great job with everything that I've seen in this thread!

Re: Donny's TOS Enterprise Interiors

I've been working at a much slower pace lately, but I've managed to get the transporter chamber looking pretty good.

Re: Donny's TOS Enterprise Interiors

Donny, your renditions of this environment make me think back to watching those films as a child and I just feel so immersed in this ship. Simply outstanding work, sir. Jaw-droppingly incredible.

There's just something about the TMP/TWOK/TSFS Enterprise that really makes it seem it seem like a real place where real life happens. Nothing in TOS, TNG, or after ever sold me quite like the set design, lighting, etc. of the early movie-era Enterprise.

(FWIW Spock's funeral in TWOK made me want to play the bagpipes as a 6-year-old, and I now make my living as a professional bagpiper in a touring Celtic rock band, so I don't make these statements lightly).

Re: Donny's TOS Enterprise Interiors

^^^ Do you have a label or any albums? I'm always on the lookout for new CeltRock to put in my iPhone.

Re: Donny's TOS Enterprise Interiors

I see there are lots of reused elements in TNG. This transporter room is basically the same.

Re: Donny's TOS Enterprise Interiors

Structurally, yes. However, the paint job and "look" of the transporter chamber is vastly different and I think too many people came close to breaking an ankle on the absurdly-greebled floor from TMP, that was done away with later in favor of a normal floor with no man-eating potholes in it.

Re: Donny's TOS Enterprise Interiors

137th Gebirg: I was going to PM you, but it won't the board won't let me, so apologies for the distraction, y'all. My band is The Killdares, and we just released a new album Steal The Sky. We also have four other studio albums and a live DVD with a dual-CD of the entire show.

Please get back on with the praise for Donny, y'all.

Re: Donny's TOS Enterprise Interiors

You know what'd make this really awesome? Walking around through Donny's creations via the Occulus Rift.

That's one thing that always struck me as odd about the TMP transporter room compared with its TOS predecessor and TNG successor — how dark the room is, all the wall and floor greebles, the operator console now being in a shielded booth... what suddenly became so unsafe about transporting?

What suddenly became so unsafe about smoking indoors now that it's (mostly) publicly outlawed? ;)

Perhaps it has more to do with the Enterprise's overall mission where they tend to beam up stuff that might be dangerous so it's their to protect the operator? In TMP, the starbase? transporter that Kirk beams up on didn't have a shielded booth nor do I recall a shield on the ST3 HQ transporter so I don't think it has anything to do with the transporter operation itself, IMHO.

Re: Donny's TOS Enterprise Interiors

I'd not thought of it that way before, but it actually makes more sense than the oft-quoted "official" reason (that the new Transport machinery gives off radiation which could be harmful to the operator in cumulative amounts - in which why not shield the machinery!?!?!)

It might explain why Voyager has a booth of sorts, too. I presume that the Enterprise-D lacked a booth because it's mission profile was more diplomatic than combative. Having said that, there may well be top-security Transporter Rooms on board the E-D that we just never saw.

Re: Donny's TOS Enterprise Interiors

I think the TMP transporter room shield is part of the soft reboot that TMP was of TOS, along with e.g. the change in Klingon appearance and the rainbow/super-streak warp-entry special effect.

In universe, if we must have an "explanation," perhaps transporters are now longer range, higher-power, and therefore more unsafe for their operators, with prolonged exposure.

Re: Donny's TOS Enterprise Interiors

They sure coulda used a shielded booth in Galaxy Quest. That's for sure.
