In universe, if we must have an "explanation," perhaps transporters are now longer range, higher-power, and therefore more unsafe for their operators, with prolonged exposure.

Yes, I believe that was the "official" explanation put out among the backstage materials. The idea was to add a visual aid on the set to constantly remind the audience how powerful the machinery was.

In universe though, it does raise the question of how the transportees are protected (Mr Scott's Guide postulates an invisible forcefield that activates during the transport process). Given the obvious solution (just cover up the damn floor machinery!) and the other examples of booth-less Transporters that blssdwlf mentioned, an alternative explanation for the booth might not be a bad idea.

I figured they just hadn't yet bolted all the floor panels into place before they had to "warp" to meet V'ger. Did we get a good look at the floor in "Wrath of Khan" or did we just see the circular platform?

That was pretty much my thoughts, Bill. We were looking at a transporter system that had just undergone repairs, and they'd left the 'hood up' to make sure it was working okay.

No idea about the booth, though. We see it again in TUC as well.

There is no view of the floor in either TWOK or TSFS. This brings up the question of whether or not to include the floor machinery in my build. It would seem odd not to have it though, seeing it's a very striking detail of the room itself.

Since the only "on screen" evidence we have shows a greeblie festooned floor (TMP) and nothing from TWoK or TSfS to contradict that, it only makes sense to depict it in your model.

Someone commented that such an arrangement looked potentially hazardous, so I merely provided a possible "in universe" explanation for that condition.

Since your goal (I assume) is to be as "screen accurate" as possible, showing anything other than what we saw in TMP would veer from your plan.

Now, if one wanted to get "creative", "grilled" floor panels or "plexi" sheets could be positioned over the greeblie "moats", allowing them to be seen and yet present a "safer" and larger walking area. But then, we didn't see anything like that in the movies. The more, ahem, "passionate" fans may "express concern".

The TUC transporter room was a reversible redress of the TNG transporter room, which was an irreversible redress of the TMP transporter room.

A black-and-white image in Mr. Scott's Guide to the Enterprise provides a fairly decent view of the transporter room from the pad looking toward the operator console. You can see some floor details in the photo.

Hahaha...yes. This is from my blog, actually . I've done a build of the transporter room in Unreal Engine 3 (which is featured in the blog you pointed to), and am rebuilding it for Unreal Engine 4.

The machinery flats for the transporter room were vacuum-formed pieces of plastic seen elsewhere in TMP, TWOK, and throughout TNG as well. They were made so that they would fit together in a seamless, tileable fashion.

Since the floor is visible not only in the set photo Shane Johnson took for Mr. Scott's Guide but also in this Good Morning America segment from 1986 — which shows sets like the transporter room and engineering as being largely untouched from their last appearances in TSFS and TWOK, I would think that implies the transporter floor was supposed to have the exposed machinery in all three appearances. Plus, the floor is one of the room's more interesting features.

Agreed, but on 80's big-hair, though.

Looking at those pics of the transporter room floor, I had forgotten how many open spaces there were - there's a drop right in front of the platform and only two narrow little walkways on either side to safely traverse, for heaven's sake! Cool to look at, but whoever designed that floor was way too much into form over function.

I don't know if there's anything useful in it, but there's also the introduction that Roddenberry filmed for the home video release of The Cage that was on the Enterprise sound stages. That was filmed either just before or just after The Voyage Home.

According to this screencap from the above-mentioned introduction of The Cage, the floor of the transporter room remained the same as it was pictured in TMP, although they seem to have added the raised segment all the way to the right of the room, which was definitely present in TNG.

Does anyone know why the TMP sets remained standing for the best part of a decade, until they were redressed for TNG? It seems like a bit of a waste of Paramount's studio space to have all these sets standing around for a film every couple of years. Was it something to do with the original arrangement for the Phase II TV series, and no one else needed the studio space in the meantime?

If you look closely, there's exposed wood between the leading edge of the floor greeblies and the front of the operator's booth. Perhaps they'd torn up some of the greeblies for use on another set in one of the movies?

That's because the booth has been pulled out (it was wild) to get that angle.
