Have you considered making a replica of the phaser they used for TSFS? I just got my replica (ok... toy) in the mail, and I love how well it manages to harken back to the TOS era, and yet brings that classy older version into the present (albeit a present over thirty years ago). Ow, there go my joints again. ;)

I think they made new communicators for TSFS too, but they were even more similar to their TOS style counterparts than any other prop.
 
I always rationalised it as a heavy-duty, rugged communicator for tough landing parties. It probably has better range than the contemporary TSFS communicator, and perhaps advanced jamming-busting features useful when beaming into hostile territory. I always thought of the wrist comms as intraship personal devices, not really landing party equipment. Even off ship in the TMP finale, they are only a couple of hundred metres from the Enterprise.

Incredible work, as ever, Donny. The phaser especially looks like I could grasp it from my laptop screen. And the in the bridge shot, the upholstery on the navigatior's chair catches the light perfectly. It's these subtle details that give your work such verisimilitude.

I got my toy TSFS phaser too! Ten year old me would be so jealous! This thing is just awesome, as is the TWOK phaser also from DST.

I plan on doing both, actually. And also the heavy-duty Tricroder from TWOK.

Is my memory correct that the tricorder in TWOK was from the same prop house as some of the winky blinkies?

1) Why on earth didn't they use the TMP tricorder.
2) Did the prop house tricorder ever show up in any other films?
 
Donny, thank you for mentioning Substance Painter. I've found out that I can use it--in slightly limited form--with my version of Max. It turns out that they introduced Substance maps in Max 2011. I've always hated texturing, and this will help tons. Thank you.

Your attention to detail is shining, as always. Love the props you're working on, and I could almost swear that you were on-set for that bridge shot. Super work.
 
Here's a "first pass" with texturing the STIII Phaser. Trying to make it look more metallic than plastic or resin. What do you think? Is the edge-wear too heavy? I don't want things to look "Star Wars" worn, but I do want them to have a sense of realism.





 
Now, that's my favorite phaser! Well, I oscillate between this and MJ's TOS phaser. Very nicely done.

I do think the edge wear might be a bit much, though. I kind of get the impression that starfleet equipment is recycled regularly and everything tends to look pretty new most of the time. Most phasers tend to ride along in a locker rather than see frequent use. SF officers rarely carry sidearms. They could conceivably be banged up a bit on an away mission, but I imagine they would get pretty thoroughly cleaned up afterwards. A phaser would only get tattered looking if on some remote outpost far away from regular maintenance.

So, is yours overdone? I might dial it back just a little. I certainly can't imagine a starfleet phaser on a starship to be any more weathered than this.

Looks great though. I recently bought the Art Asylum version of this one and I've been "shooting" stuff constantly for weeks!

Yeah, it certainly looks more realistic, but not necessarily within its Starfleet context.

Then again... Uhura had one just laying around on the console at the Old City Station... And she certainly had her opinion about "reality" then and there. ;)

(Beautiful btw. Certainly one of top favorite designs.)
 
I agree with Albertese - it looks way too worn for a Starfleet phaser. Instead of paint scraping off the edges I'd smudge up and dull the surface to reflect people handling it.
 
I'm not as familiar with how the finish on the prop looked in the movie. The wear kind of gives me a STV vibe. Looks great.
 
Yeah, definitely a bit too much wear, IMO. It crosses the line from "normal wear & tear" to "Why the hell hasn't that beaten-up thing been replaced?"
 
I agree wholeheartedly! It's amazing what a good night's sleep's fresh eyes and feedback from fellow Trekkers can do. Here's the second pass. I've dialed the edgewear back tremendously, and given it a more "metallic imperfections" feel:
