Donny's TOS Enterprise Interiors

This one does evoke a more TOS design, but why did they lose the viewscreen?

As far as Donny's design goes it looks good, but is the casing supposed to be that shiny plastic?

Given that he said he's waiting for "fresh eyes" I assume he simply hasn't done the texturing yet.

Looks great, so far.

You mean the little disc with the Moire pattern (driven by a stop-watch mechanism in the "hero" prop)? To be honest, I was never sure of the "in universe" function of that component. As a kid, I just assumed it was the speaker grille and the little "square" by the two button/knobs was the microphone.

Sincerely,

Bill

^^^ Was exactly my thought. The protective flip-lid served as the antenna, but my beliefs were likely biased by FJ's diagrams. An old HAM friend of mine looked at the communicator schematics that FJ put in the SFTM and he said it looked like a functioning CB radio schematic.

Nope, this is it. Fully textured. The STIII communicator was very basic and didn't have too much detail.

As far as a "screen", I'm with Redfern in assuming the TOS communicator's moire pattern was not a screen, but a microphone or speaker of some sort. Who knows?

Anyway, here are some more beauty shots:

To be fair, I'm not discounting that disc COULD be a screen. But given the tricorder had a display screen, one clearly having the shape of a conventional cathode ray tube of a 1960s television, odds are, if the comm' were meant to have a video display (even if rarely used), it would have likely looked much like the tricorder's.

Sincerely,

Bill

It's no more a screen than the moire on Spock's station is. It's just eye candy to make it look like it's doing something.

You'd think that if they'd intended the little moire disc to be a display screen of some sort, they would have done an insert shot to show it working in that manner at some point during the original series.

Bingo.

Regarding the OS Communicator, I always just accepted the spinning moire disc as a display that showed some sort of frequency modulation required to transit long distances. Besides, weren't they playing with frequencies to create a landslide in Friday's Child where we got a great look at the disc spinning?

I just try to avoid making "emphatically certain" statements because doing so usually results in my being in error about a given subject. I've been proven wrong about so many things that I'm beginning to doubt my own existence. :wtf:

Sincerely,

Bill

So I'm going to start modeling some props for sickbay soon, and I've been wondering about the prop McCoy is using on Peter Preston in Sickbay:

I took a browse through Modern Prop's inventory page, as I always do when looking for TWOK props, and whatdoyaknow? It's there!

And there's also a video of the thing on their Facebook page. Here's a screencap of that as well.

I love finding things like this!

Yeah, that's sort of what I meant when I said "display screen" back there. Having an indicator display (even a trippy moire pattern) would be essential when trying to tune your device to other frequencies. Or maybe that was all automated by the time of TSFS?

Ah, like a futuristic oscilloscope type readout! Sorry, I misunderstood your original intention. That I can get behind! :techman:

Sincerely,

Bill

Thats great, as long as Bones isn't sticking it up his behind :p

That's an amazing device -- it can suture through a uniform! (Unless it was suturing Preston's uniform to his chest, in which case we now know how he really died...)

As I recall, there is a visible hole in the uniform. And by that point, McCoy is only employing stopgaps, as he knows Preston isn't going to make it. It's probably just a palliative measure.
