Dollhouse S1 recap thread, discussion, DVD set and unaired episode.

Re: Dollhouse S1 recap thread, discussion, DVD set and unaired episode

^ I haven't seen Echo yet. Prolly have to wait til I get back from my hols in a couple of weeks. It's interesting what you say about the Whedon-dialogue, because that's something that I really missed from the show at the start and noticed it when they started speaking in Joss-speak a few episodes in. They didn't seem to do that much in earlier episodes.
Echo is much more what you'd expect from Whedon, it's a much better pilot and even the characters seem more likeable than they did for a lot of the series.

Re: Dollhouse S1 recap thread, discussion, DVD set and unaired episode

Well we watched the first and second episodes on the DVD last night. The first one was a bit confusing but the second one seems to be setting the scene nicely. Sorry didn't pay attention to what they're called. Overall first impressions: not too shabby at all but the people who're supposed to be in charge are woefully incompetent. I hope all the plot development isn't centred around that.

More S2 promotion shots just for Forbin:

Re: Dollhouse S1 recap thread, discussion, DVD set and unaired episode

^^^^^
They may be for Forbin but I'm enjoying them also. Please keep them coming if there are more.

I enjoyed "Echo" a lot more than the aired premiere, "Ghost." I think DeWitt's explanation of the premise is much more clear than anything from "Ghost." Also, "Echo" has a lot more funny dialogue of the type I've come to expect on a Joss Whedon show.

Not sure at what point you guys came into the thread but earlier it was discussed how FOX made Joss reshoot the pilot to their specs and the first 6 eps to follow similar. That is why you are picking up on those differences and notice as the show goes he sprinkles his style in until when you hit the last half of the season its simmered to a fuller Whedon expectation.

What who are called? The Dolls? They are often referred to as 'Actives'.

Re: Dollhouse S1 recap thread, discussion, DVD set and unaired episode

Big fan of Buffy/Angel/Firefly but have never seen a solitary minute of Dollhouse before getting the DVD the other day. The basic sketch didn't overly grab me so I couldn't be bothered watching week in week out, knowing the boxset would soon be round the corner. Five episodes in thus far

Quick question, how come the episodes are an average of 47 minutes long? Aren't most US shows without ads about 41 minutes these days? Are these eps extended for the DVD?

Fox experimented with shorter, or less breaks on Dollhouse and Fringe last season... something they're not doing this season.

Re: Dollhouse S1 recap thread, discussion, DVD set and unaired episode

It was some kind of experiment that FOX tried last season. Don't ask me about the details, though.

All I know, is that it failed, and now season 2 episodes will have regular length again.

Also, am I wrong for thinking Amy Acker looks pretty hot with those scars? :D

No, I thought the same thing. The woman is beautiful and Alpha just added a cool new accessory. ;)

Re: Dollhouse S1 recap thread, discussion, DVD set and unaired episode

I gave up on the show after the first three episodes which were all pretty forgettable. All the hoopla over Epitaph One is what sold me to spend a couple nights giving it another try. As advertised, the series really changes gears in the episode "Man on the Street". I don't know if I'm gonna call myself a fan just yet, but I have a very similar feeling to this as I did after Buffy S1. I'm not in love with it, but I like the characters and the premise enough to try it out some more. Joss rewarded me well last time, so here's to hoping.

Honestly, and this hurts to say it, but Eliza is kind of the weak link in this cast. She's not terrible, but I don't buy her in most of her different persona's. This was most evident for me in "Haunted", which actually suffered(IMHO) because I at no point believed that she was a 50-ish year old dead rich woman. However, this could just be bias on my end, and it could also be intentional, from a creative standpoint, that as Echo is "evolving", more of her is leaking into the imprints.

I really thought Enver Gjokaj was a highlight. I think he's the most believable selling the imprints. He was equally believable as the charming, debonair Roger; the russian mob grunt Lubov, and even Mr. Dominic! All said, I look forward to seeing more from him in the future.

Just checkin' in, so this Friday "Vows" is the season premiere?

I'm not very attracted to Dr. Saunders. She's too dour & judgmental. The only time I was particularly attracted to her on this show was in the "Omega" flashbacks in which we saw her in her doll state and as that crazy criminal woman. I'm starting to suspect that I'm more attracted to the Winifred Burkle persona from Angel than I am to Amy Acker physically. What drove this point home for me was in "Stage Fright." Sierra isn't really my type but I thought she was absolutely adorable as the nerdy Australian fan. Lets face it, a woman in the right pair of glasses is a total turn on. (SEE the Wesley/Lilah sex scene in Angel "Supersymmetry." "Leave them on.")

Agreed that Victor sells the imprints way better. I was especially blown away by the scene from "Briar Rose" where they put Dominic in Victor's body. I mean, when you're just watching Dominic as Dominic, there's nothing overtly remarkable about his mannerisms, just a lot of minor tics that are mostly unnoticeable and individual to each of us. Yet Victor totally absorbed all of these and was unquestionably Dominic.

I'd say Eliza Dushku is better on this show than she was on Tru Calling. (She was definately the weak link there. Harrison & Davis totally carried that show, IMO.) I thought she was pretty good in "Haunted" though. Particularly in this exchange:
"...That's why you're so Elmo."
"Emo."
"That's not a word dear."
When she said that, she was totally channeling Diana Scarwid or Jessica Walter.

If the show has a weakness, it's that I'm still not convinced this premise can be sustained as a TV series. The missions-of-the-week aren't usually that interesting and the overall mythology seems to struggle against itself. It's like Joss doesn't want to tip his hand too early but as a result is holding so much back that I'm not even getting enough of a taste to keep me interested. (However, I haven't seen "Epitaph One" yet, so that might change things.) As is, Joss Whedon's previous work on all his other shows is the only thing that has kept me from dumping this show. I'm only marginally more engaged now than I was when I first saw "Ghost."

I'm also very... confused by the ambivalent portrayal of the Dollhouse. On the one hand, I believe the earnestness & good intentions of Boyd, Topher, & DeWitt. On the other, the Dollhouse is clearly an extralegal operation, keeping Dominic in some kind of stage somewhere between life imprisonment & a death sentence without due process or even much evidence that he deserves it. (At least Kevin Kilner's character deserved what he got. He raped Sierra and he intended to rape & kill Mellie.)

Totally agree, but I don't blame Eliza, I blame the writers. For some reason they made the secondary characters in Tru fully realized 3-dimensional people, but completely neglected Tru herself. All they gave Tru to do was run around and solve the plot. We never really got to know much about Tru herself - hopes, dreams... personality...

Re: Dollhouse S1 recap thread, discussion, DVD set and unaired episode

I just watched "Epitaph One" today. Holy shit! That was intense! And unlike nearly every other episode of this type I've ever seen, there was no time travel flibbertygibbet to negate it or imply that it may not happen. On the one hand, this episode had me very interested in things to come. On the other hand, this may get very depressing. Still, it's nice to know that they'll be keeping Victor around. And I nearly squealed with unmasculine delight when I saw that Dominic gets out of the Attic. Dominic is my favorite.

I am really intrigued with where they're going from here. I just finished "Epitaph One" about 15 minutes ago (yay Netflix!), and that was crazy. Does Season 2 actually pick up from there (I'm assuming the season won't be taking place in 2019), or are they saving more of that stuff for later?

Re: Dollhouse S1 recap thread, discussion, DVD set and unaired episode

Season 2 will revisit 2019, but not take place there exclusively.

Re: Dollhouse S1 recap thread, discussion, DVD set and unaired episode

It was a very interesting departure but if it continues from where it left off then a) it can't really be called Dollhouse any more and b) it will lose a lot of returning viewers due to the post-apocalyptic thang, which will turn off the average on-the-fence viewer. So the commissioning company won't go for it.

Re: Dollhouse S1 recap thread, discussion, DVD set and unaired episode

Like Lindley said, it's not gonna take place in 2019 permanently now.
But we will see this future again. After all, this is the future of the DH-verse.
It's not some alternate timeline as one would normally expect.
