How does your dog let you know he/she wants to play? The dog I have years ago would sit and stare at me. Not blink just stare. She would then bring me this old rag and something to put in it like one of her bones. She loved me to tied up the rag and put the bone in it. She was amazing and could untie knots with her teeth. She would just lay there and work on it until it was out. Then I would have to repeat. It was fun to watch her.

Our rottie would trot up with his rope ring (his favourite toy) in his mouth and expect you to play - the fate of any visitor to the house.
the Shih-tzu/Maltese crosses don't seem to want to play in the same way. But when they want a walk they'll sit and watch you.
