Absolutely fascinating article, Publiusr - thank you very much for the link ! The Molossian does look like a lion, and reminds me a bit of the modern Mastiff and Cane Corso breeds.
It was also wonderful to read about Lord Byron's love for his Newfoundland - I have a Newfie myself, an Irish Spotted, so I completely understand Byron making a memorial to him that was larger than his own !

Aw, Shelties ! They even have a nose like a dolphin for those snow dives !
