Doggies, Doggos and Doggeroos!

We had a German Shepard who was getting on in years so thought was given to getting another dog and my brother wanted to get a rottweiler and I had to admit I was a bit worried because of the general bad press they seem to get.

My brother did his research found a good breeder and got a puppy with good bloodlines (though American rather than European). My brother had thought of breeding him, but lifting the leg once too often in the house resulted in a snip.

He soon showed who was boss the GSD but they were fine together. In 2004 my sister's Shih-Tzu/Maltese-X came to live with us and she and the rottie got on like a house on fire.

(backyard didn't normally look like that - was clean out the sheds time).

Oh and the laws in Australia were changed which meant that tail docking was banned but our was pre-change so he just a stump that got lots of wagging.

Now I live vicariously with other people's dogs :)

This is Cocoa who belongs to one of my wife's support workers. She's about 2 years old and was rescue dog and has come a long way since they got her.

Beautiful and I love all dogs faces but there is something about rotties. I love the one sitting strategically next to the BBQ  "I'll stay here keeping guard while you cook those delicious burgers and sausages".

I'm not sure what the status of docking is in the UK but it might be banned now as well. I think the original reason for docking was because the tails could get caught up in ropes when the dogs were pulling carts but I think it's now only done for showing them at competitions. All mine were pedigree but couldn't be shown for one reason or another but it was those little imperfections that made them special.

My favourite quote is by Samuel Butler and it sums up dogs perfectly:

The great pleasure of a dog is that you may make a fool of yourself with him and not only will he not scold you, but he will make a fool of himself too.

Not so sure he was guarding - more like hoping from yummy falling his way :)

He was also known to help himself (well it was either him or the cat) as mum found out when her work lunches disappeared on occasions.

yes our was the same - little marking on his paw (almost like a scratch) but even it's now allowed in Australia.

At that point in time we'd never seen a rottie with a tail and my brother thought they might be some skinny thing that didn't suit the rest of the dog. But when a rottie tail was finally seen they do sit well with the rest of the dog.
