It's possible to make something new that isn't crap. Some of the STO ships are pretty interesting, without looking totally foreign, like the Enterprise F, which was actually the output of a contest.

While the F is nice it looks similar to the E and Voyager and too reminiscent of an era of Trek that was on screen for almost 20 years. Let's not go the safe option.

The F is supposed to resemble the E or Voyager it is supposed to represent an era of Trek that was on for 20 years as Sto takes place right afterwards. There are plenty of ways to go in a different direction regarding ship design without it ending up hideous and having to resort to ripping off 40+ year old rejected concept art.

I like to be able to express a simple like or dislike without having misleading words put into my mouth.

And even meant humorously, having to come up with an alternative option yourself kind of undermines your point, doesn't it?
It's a simple binary choice. The wording "slightly unappealing" is obviously ironic.

My joke doesn't undermine my point, because it was a joke.

I think this footage is an elaborate troll

Has there ever been a case where a movie/TV company deliberately "trolls" its fanbase at comic-con? Is that a particularly good marketing idea? The troll theory sounds much more like fan denial.

Nobody makes any creative decision without a reason, and I'm sure there were reasons for doing this, even if it's nothing other than misguided fan-service. But I doubt that any of it will have been worth the fan blowback. Trek fans wait all this time for Trek to return to TV. The ship is one of the main characters, if not THE main character. Fans have a reason to expect a rolling piece of art.

A lot of people bitched to high heaven about the "ugly" Enterprise D when she launched. Why should Discovery fare any better? ;)

Now that you mention I can't think of any it's probably just wishful thinking at this point. However we know nothing about this show other than the title and it's in the prime timeline. We aren't even sure this is the main hero ship it could be something like a prototype the crew starts out with for example, I admit that too is speculation.

Considering the all inclusive philosophy this series will supposedly espouse, could this design represent one of the "great experiments" in starfleet history? This perhaps being the first ship designed with input from several member races of the federation and thus appearing less earth-centric than what we're used to?
Looking forward to what will certainly be a more refined, detailed and photo-realistic version when the series debuts.

I wouldn't read too much into the hull having a triangle - it's just a visual quirk of MacQuarrie's design.

It still fits perfectly well with other Starfleet ships, as a design tangent.

And after that Starfleet realized what a "Great Mistake" that "Great Experiment" was and reverted back to the tried and tested designs of the Constitution class, parked that monstrosity in Spacedock One as a monument of failure for all to see, hauled the Enterprise back into drydock and created Starfleet's most advanced and aesthetically pleasing starship design up to that point.

Nothing will ever look better than Probert's refit, to be honest.

I voted no, but I wish there was like 2 more options. I don't think it looks that bad, but I can't wait to see the final product. Now, it looks slightly too big and bulky.

Even though I just saw a joke on facebook where it was like a merging of the Enterprise and a Klingon Battlecruiser and I got a chuckle out of it.

That was actually one of the first things I though of when looking at it, and that's actually one of the things I like about it. Although I'm sure it's entirely coincidental.

Not only does the F look way too much like previous ships and feel incredibly unoriginal, it's also far uglier than this design. It looks like a top heavy, bloated whale. Easily the ugliest iteration I've ever seen of the 90s trek style.

I'll stick with the drek from a five year old free to play mmo over the flaming garbage they got in the teaser.

Anybody remember what Voyager's first look was? Wasn't it half runabout or something? How long did they go between that and what we ended up with?

The teaser version of the Discovery looks way too retro. It's not the nineties any more.

There's a nice looking ship hidden in there somewhere. I hope the final design finds it.

Oh look, a cross between Voyager and the Enterprise-E. That isn't very interesting to me. Pretty dull, in fact.

I think we're way past the point where there's going to be so radical a redesign on the Discovery that it barely resembles what we've seen, if that's what you're implying. Heather Kadin said it wasn't finalized and would be further "honed" but she also said "the concepts of the ship are totally what we’re going for" so I think she just means additional detailing/texturing rather than a total overhaul of the basic configuration.

Well, then we're obviously screwed.

Seriously though, I don't really care what the ship looks like. It could be the butt-ugliest design ever, as long as the stories, the characters, and the actors are good.
