I can't speak for others, but I want to make clear, that I am NOT disliking the design, because it is too different or because I always want Starfleet ships to look the same. I dislike it, because I find it ugly and a bad design. Also: Me not liking the design does NOT mean I won't watch the show.

I'm sure others who don't like the design feel the same way.

If it truly is based on the Planet of the Titans design, I'd actually find that kind of awesome.

I am amazed at the perpetual capacity of Trekkies to find offense at something based on so little information. I'm not knocking the criticisms in this thread --you're going to like the design, or you are not-- but the stuff I am seeing on Facebook about how this series is going to be a failure because of an incomplete design and a teaser trailer... that's just bonkers.

I'm pretty sure the series concept will make the reasons for this unusual design departure apparent.

I'm not too happy about the fact that the series is being promoted by low-quality footage of the hero ship, rather than something more tantalizing. But the ship herself is fine - if she somehow ties in to what the series is going to be about. Attributes that stand out:

- She's big. Bigger than Archer's at any rate. Is she going to achieve something big by design? That is, has she been built big for a purpose?
- She's heavily armed. Archer's ship had more than a dozen gunports, but those weren't all that prominent; Kirk's ship had invisible weapons. This girl has very prominent guns. Is she intended to fight a lot?
- She's muscular in the engine department. Is she intended to go far, or fast, or both?

If things just sorta happen to her, regardless of the design, then I think this both a wasted dramatical opportunity (because all other Star Trek has been of this "sorta happens" type) and a poor use of treknology opportunities (because a thing that looks distinct ought to be used in distinctive ways). If she goes against apparent type (fights very little or loses fights despite outgunning other hero ships, say), it's sheer waste, too. But if there is even a halfhearted attempt to make drama out of the shape of the ship, I'm ecstatic - a first for Trek! And if there are nods to the source material ("proper" timeframe), I'll vote on the first option.

Until then, I'll just vote "bulky, clumsy, aesthetically unpleasant overall, but mildly interesting in its own right".

As presented it isn't very attractive but I hold out hope the finished version will be acceptable. If not, tough - I am not going to not watch the series based on a ugly ship.

I voted in the ship's favor because the two choices were poorly phrased and inadequate. I'd say that the concept appeals quite a lot, but needs refinement.

This is how I feel. I'm not going to vote though because I feel the options are too extreme. I'm not against the design, not a fan of the POTT re-designs for the E in general, but there are many details that I am really liking, also.

We'll see what happens. :)

I'm not crazy about it, but it isn't enough for me to write off the show completely like most of Facebook seems to be thinking ....

I had this random thought about that Lost In Space movie reboot from a decade or so back...when they had the Jupiter 2 lift off, and for a brief moment, it looked like the old ship from the TV series, then broke apart to reveal a new sleeker take on the original design. Maybe, just maybe, this ship could be a container of some kind for the Discovery we will eventually come to know and love? A "red herring" of sorts?

I don't think it looks particularly "good", but sometimes ugly is interesting. I like the overall aesthetic of the clip, with the ship coming out of the asteroid. I've always wanted to see some kind of an asteroid base on Star Trek. But I think the design of the ship doesn't really matter that much. I'd be interested in seeing a "less perfect" ship that maybe isn't Starfleet's flagship, but is assigned to the periphery of the Federation. Maybe something like a combination of voyager and DS9.

agreed.

fans: give us new Star Trek!

* Discovery teaser*

fans: ew! ship is awful! do not want! will not watch!

It's possible to make something new that isn't crap. Some of the STO ships are pretty interesting, without looking totally foreign, like the Enterprise F, which was actually the output of a contest.

I don't understand how people are conflicted by this. Wording aside, it's a simple like/dislike choice.
I like to be able to express a simple like or dislike without having misleading words put into my mouth.

I chose option 3: Hideous monstrosity.
And even meant humorously, having to come up with an alternative option yourself kind of undermines your point, doesn't it?

Let's just say this...

CBS is a money-making operation, right?

They have made most of their prime-continuity money on home video and merch, right?

Wouldn't it make sense to create a ship that people go WOW! and would want to immediately want to buy as a model or see on a poster, mug, or a T-Shirt?

Wasn't the Connie refit just that kind of a ship? They agonized over it, all those revisions, and it shows in the finished product.

To create a story-idea around flying an ugly ship just runs totally counter to making money on merch. For a parody like the garbage scow Quark, yeah, but not for Trek.

That's a good point I never thought of the merchandising angle fans wouldn't want merchandise based of an ugly hero ship. I can't think of many hero ships that are ugly perhaps the Serenity from Firefly, the Milllenium Falcon from Star Wars, but those are very different properties than Trek. There is a reason the study models based on the Mcquarrie art ended up as hulks in the BoBW and Unification graveyard scenes and not starring in a major motion picture.

That's why I think this footage is an elaborate troll to gain some controversy and get people all riled up over Trek again. The idea of a triangle for a main hull and saucer can work and look good. Check out LordSarvain's take on the Planet of the Titans Enterprise over at Deviantart to see what I mean.

If we ended up with something like in the links I posted I could get behind that but what we got in the teaser footage is atrocious imo. Wasn't there plans on giving Kirk and crew the Excelsior after Star Trek III for the new ship but the fans hated it at the time so we ended up with the A? Maybe history will repeat itself lol.

It's growing on me the more I view it. It's distinct and rough and I could come around pretty easily once the visual effects are implemented.
