Does the current state of Star Trek say anything about what fans want?

That's false. Very false, because Trek has always pushed the limits with swear words, and it progressed upwards with each passing year.

So, if this is a "shockingly bad" decision then I will go back to TNG and say that Picard saying "damn" and "merde" is far worse and out of character than what newer Trek has presented. And "oh shit" by Data was worse.

"Let's get the hell out of here." - Captain James T. Kirk, "City on the Edge of Forever".

but if you can't find joy in almost 1,000 hours of TV and movies then you probably can't find joy in any new stuff coming from that intellectual property.
I truly believe this is where many genre fans are, specifically Star Trek and Star Wars fans, as I see this attitude way more, but then I frequent those circles way more. It's not enough to just enjoy past installments; the future ones must be as great, or greater than, the past.

That's untenable at best.
@SalyutBuran , do you know how rarely @BillJ and I agree with each other 100%? We drive each other crazy most of the time.

For BillJ and me to both be coming after you? Ya done fucked up.
Whoah, whoah, how can we be swearing here...?:wtf::whistle:

Fun fact: The Last of Us is aimed at a niche audience with fairly limited reach but it's clearly a hit and one of the few streaming series that seems to be on everyone's tongues at the moment. "Niche" doesn't mean "failure to reach an adequate audience." A lot of popular shows aren't geared for kids from 9 to 90.
It stars pedro pascal, who's like literally the biggest name in television.

He was an outstanding success in the Mandalorian, Narcos, and Game of Thrones. Guy's a big actor on 3 tentpoll production.

Guy ambiguously ethnic, guy looks like he could be from any Middle Eastern/Canamerican/Latin American or European country. He plays characters who are economically disadvantaged while also displaying some notable level of social sophistication. This is how you maximize your appeal.

He's attractive to women, and yet has a history of playing aggressive physically competent characters.

Guy plays exclusively characters with a rigid moral code, while also having very liberal flexibilities.

The show is literally the most relatable trope possible/end of the world. Made exactly when a global pandemic has finally tapered off to a point that it is now ok to engage in it.

It's HBO who on average are pretty good at grabbing a wide range of demographics.

Then you have an install fanbase based on a game.

That isn't remotely niche. Without padro pascal, maybe. But Pedro Pascal is more or less proving he's the "last true cowboy".

If you say so. But I know "niche" when I see it, and that show isn't Watercooler/Everyone and their Grandpa Watches It kinda content.
I haven't watched it and find Pascal dramatically overrated. But, what do I know? I'm not in the mainstream audience ;)

Hold on. How can Pedro Pascal simultaneously be the biggest name in television for starring in The Mandalorian and The Last of Us, when we have been assured that the reason HBO Max and Disney+ are failing to turn profits is that the audience hates and feels betrayed by their shows?

It's all very scientific. It would take a scientist to explain it to you. Please purchase my course at my website. No refunds. Book is extra.

With all the fun it brings, we know the answer that would be given: "the woke mob is paying for Disney+ and HBO Max, propping up a Hispanic to keep the white man down!"

And? As much as I would love to believe that everyone I meet is a stable person, my experience in the mental health field has taught me otherwise. People are mentally false. They present as stable and lie to get by.

These goal posts are not moving, I'm not talking about some deep down secret mental issue. i'm talking about rather straight forward behaviors, to the people swear. That isn't a vague ill defined aspect of conscientiousness. How one controls their self expression is deeply imbedded in the concept.

What new Trek has done is pulled back that false face
The word you're looking for is the imbedded escapism that was always part and parcel in trek. Whatever way you want to see it a Socialist Utopian, a time when the good old boys could make the world right, courage in the face of danger, or simply narratives that aren't weighted down with emotional content, the point is it's established as part of the show.

and shown that people can be traumatized, emotionally damaged and scarred and still function.

Doesn't mean anything if nobody wants to be in the same room as you.

They are honest rather than fake. Give me more people like that. I get enough fakeness in my life.

A room of mentally unstable people are not gonna be put in charge of a spaceship. There's nothing honest about that. The fact you admit that they're all unstable is enough for me.

If you like love it, but don't act like it isn't a total 180 from the traditional show.

I really don't care if you love or hate it, that's so incredibly irrelevant to the conversation.
It's weather or not it has mass appeal and appeal to target demos of people who are fans of the other treks.

That's some ridiculousness right there. A brand is not sentient. It cannot betray. That people feel betrayed is on them,
You're trying yet another semantics game trying to move the goal posts. Brand loyalty is a real thing in marketing. It's a measurable thing that predicts the long term success of a product, especially when you can't maintain long term investments in product quality. There's no discussion of whether or not betrayal is real or imagined, the point is if fans feel betrayed they'll act betrayed and not subscribe to your service.

not the brand. Sorry. If I don't like a show, I don't watch it.
Again are you sure you're in the right thread?

If people feel like it's alienating them we have a million channels out there to tickle your ears.
We have a handfull of streaming services and they've done the best they can to hoover up and control every ip/studio under the sun,. I mean it's literally billion dollar trends we're talking about. Stargate was like the last man standing until Amazon saved us from have a singular semi independent franchise.

Alienate away. I still watch it and that makes it worth while because of the conversations I can have with people about pain, trauma and struggle.

You won't watch if they can't afford to make it.

I truly don't think you have watched Star Trek...

Try "City on the Edge of Forever" or DS9's "Duet", both highly rated by the fanbase...
