Does the current state of Star Trek say anything about what fans want?

Well, to start with, “woke” has been defined and redefined so many times over the last few years that its lost all meaning, and most users of the word probably don't even know what they mean anymore. But go on.

How could that possibly be??? Everywhere I go, I see people using their smart phones for everything they're doing. You don't think if a person doesn't know what "WOKE" meant, She/he wouldn't take another look into their phones for the definition? I don't mind critics taking liberties to a word which is involved in the awareness of, and the active attentiveness for important societal facts and issues.

I agree that being a "fan" of the material isn't necessary (although, I understand people sometimes do things just for the paycheck, but at this level I don't know why you'd want to run a show like this and not be a "fan" of it), you just need someone that understands character and story.
Any competent writer would become familiar. I've yet to have the "pew-pew" reaction many have so perhaps I'm of a different mindset. Regardless, I don't trust fans to run a show.

A writer was recently asked to define the word live on air. She couldn’t. The clip went viral.

I am as aware as any that "woke" is supposed to mean "aware of inequalities in our society". But the problem is that it's turned into "you will think like me and support my agenda of equality, or you will be silenced and/or punished." I am fine with the first, but if you expect me to capitulate to the second, you don't know me very well.

And in that vein, I don't force my opinions on others. If you feel that people who don't care about a fandom are a good choice for managing it, I'm sure you have your reasons.

Who cares?

Although, it's refreshing to see you admit, directly and without euphemism, that the shadowy "agenda" which you find objectionable is no more than the insistence on equality.

That clarifies a great deal.

Clearly whatever is being currently churned out under the Star Trek label is bringing in enough money for the shows to keep going. Therefore they must be giving the viewers what they are happy to pay for.
And the only thing that matters to the producers is that nice profitable bottom line.
Get over it.
*sigh*

The economics of TV have changed such that they can make money while satisfying a fraction of the number of viewers required in the 80s or 90s.

And with higher budgets. You can't tell me Disco wasn't making money, running five seasons with the FX it had.

I want something original. I thought I had it with "Discovery" and "Picard". But the franchise erased the original writing for "Discovery" after its second season. As for "Picard", the writing for that series kept screwing up by the end of each season. You know what? I think Star Trek needs to die. Period.

I'm pretty sure the cancellation of Star Trek: Discovery mostly reflects the fact that Paramount+ has never made a profit, streaming TV has been a bubble for the last ten years, and now Wall Street is putting pressure on all the streamers to cut costs and show a profit. It's the same reason some really wonderful shows on on other streamers like HBO Max and Disney+ are getting the ax -- almost all the streamers are in trouble these days.

We've been extraordinarily lucky these last few years to have five Star Trek series running simultaneously. I suspect we're gonna be lucky if we have one live action and one animated in a couple years.
I honestly never thought we'd have such a revival of Trek again, after the days of TNG, DS9, and VOY all taking up the mid to late 1990s TV and filled with Trekkie goodness. That we also got a couple of decent films in there as well, we were getting a glut of Star Trek, and I think it spoiled us a bit.

That said, I'm glad I've got to see so many wonderful new Trek shows, even if a few were less to my liking, it made other Trek fans happy, and that's good enough for me.

Star Trek does not need to die. It needs to keep evolving.

If modern Star Trek is just not for you, that's legitimate. But that doesn't mean it should end just because you don't like it. If it's not your thing, I would advise that you cancel that Paramount+ subscription and stop watching. There's plenty of great film and television out there, including over 700 episodes of pre-2017 Star Trek and thirteen feature films.

If Star Trek isn't for you stop watching it.

No one should feel any loyalty, obligation, or necessity to view a whole franchise, or it's constituent parts if it is not a source of entertainment and enjoyment.
