Does Paramount no longer own Star Trek?

My mother seldom if ever went to movies. So when we finally got a VHS player, she was caught off-guard by language that had never issued from our TV set before. I'm not sure she had realized before that videotapes were not "edited for television" or even that such language could be employed in modern movies. I swear, she froze in shock the first time a curse word came from the TV.

(The movie in question was "The Warriors," btw.)

Impressive, I know that my nan (who is just shy of 80) thinks bloody is a swearword, although I remember attending a council meeting with my other grandmother who was a union rep and afterwards in the bar, I was impressed by how much she swore.

The pre-restoration version of Guns of Navarrone (including, IIRC, the theatrical release) had to dub Richard Harris' opening dialogue, replacing "bloody" with "ruddy" (I think, it's been a long time since I've watched the extra feature detailing that change)--probably so your nan would feel comfortable going to the cinema to watch Gregory Peck and Anthony Quinn. ;)

Wasn't there some kind of an issue with O'Brien saying bollocks in one of the DS9 episodes?

As I recall, Odo's very first line of dialogue was, "Who the hell are you?"

Directed at Sisko, of course.

Enterprise threw around "SOB" sometimes. I think that's the first time that was used in a Trek TV series.

Personally, as someone non-religious myself, I never understood how or why Christianity became the default profanity source. Why does no one use "Buddha" as a swear word?

Possibly because Christianity was the biggest religion in the "Western world" and the religion most people would have contact with? ... In the Roman Empire their gods would have been used as curse words too and it later evolved into the Catholic Church so the tradition has existed in Europe for millenia.

Also because Buddha isn't a deity. ;)

Yeah, I know there are plenty of curses that don't call on authentic deities. But all the really good ones do. :techman:

That was spectacular. Thank you for sharing it. :techman:

Personally, I'm still crushed that "frell" didn't catch on the way "frak" did.
"Frell" sounds way too wimpy to work as a swear word to my ear. It's a very soft-sounding word, whereas "Frak" has the hard "K" sound that really makes it sing as profanity.

I really liked the fake-racial slur that the TV series Alien Nation used: Slag. It sounded ugly enough to be a real slur. I can't remember if it was used in the movie version or not.

Isn't slag Brit slang for a slur against a woman's virtue?
Yup. A British friend of mine compared it to "bitch" in U.S. parlance.

Ha. The whole "slag is a bad word in the UK" issue is why the Transformers franchise has been unable to use "Slag" for the classic Autobot Dinobot in recent years. Shame too cause I like the name "Slag" more than "Slug", but my female friends come first.

Here's something I've always wanted to discuss: suppose you are an atheist/agnostic. And you say something, possibly a swear, involving religious terminology (e.g. "Oh my god!" "God fucking damn!" "What the hell?") And someone else who is religious comments that it's weird for a nonreligious person to say such things. What do you say?

I tell them to fuck off.

Just once, in TNG, when Geordi's trying to save their ass from some energy dampening field, or stop a runaway core breach or something, I wish he would get frustrated, slam the console with his fist, and yell "FUCK! God fucking dammit!"

I know Chief Engineer MacDougal would have. In fact, I'd probably hit Ten Forward with her and knock a few back. I bet she can swear up a storm.

It's surprising at how he survived fourteen years in prison, unless the unhingedness was caused while being inside.

Wait, what?

I usually end up pluralizing it, like in Galactica ("oh my gods", "gods, no", etc.) Offends everybody!

And I hope Montreal gets a new Expos team. ;)

Is that actually a real possibility? I actually saw someone wearing an Expos hat today, and I was all like "is that still even a thing?"

Personally, I'm still crushed that "frell" didn't catch on the way "frak" did.

I've become particularly enamoured with "gorram"! :D

Yes, it's a thing! :) There has been a real organized effort to bring a new Expos team to Montreal for quite a while now. It's called the Montreal Baseball Project.

Huh. Well, Winnipeg got the Jets back, so I guess anything is possible! :) Good luck to them.

Although if Montreal gets the Expos back before Québec City gets the Nordiques back... :ouch:

And there I go throwing around sports teams' names like I actually know what I'm talking about or something...

Wait, what?

He said in one of the MA threads he created and if you have the inclination, it's all public record and easily searchable. Plus it was shared down in the land that is not mentioned where goats and bridges are often discussed.

As for swearing here in good ol' Blighty, I remember a documentary from years ago that mentioned that the BBC has a list of swear words and the severity of them and the level you can use them, doing a quick search though of said list just comes up with some declined freedom of information requests.

And then of course, if a film wants the goldie locks of ratings, so a 12A or a PG13, there a strict rules on levels of swearing and the use of each word. Which is amusing given the first time I watched Into Darkness, shit is said a couple of times, but almost said and edited to give the audience the impression it has been said a fair few more times.
