I think the future is exactly what a lot of fans seem to want: Forget worldbuilding, just throw an interesting story onscreen using some recognizable Trek things like transporters and phasers, no extended Trek story spanning several series, no need to specify a timeline, it's all just stuff in space with the Star Trek name on it..

Works for me.

Seriously, it's worth remembering that not every fan watches STAR TREK for the same reasons or with the same priorities. I get that some fans are all about the "world-building" and the overall future history, but for others that's just the backdrop to whatever individual story is being told in the foreground. They may be more into the hardware, or the characters, or social allegories, or inspirational messages, or whatever. They may love TOS and ignore VOYAGER or vise versa. They may be fascinated by Klingons, but feel no urgent need to revisit the Bajorans ever again.

And that's fine. There's no "right" way to watch STAR TREK.

In short, providing an "extended Trek story spanning several series" is not necessarily what STAR TREK is to everyone.

I can't help but to be painfully aware of that, it was what I was commenting on. The problem comes when a group of viewers says "I don't care about this aspect, therefore it's unimportant and no one should". It hurts no one's enjoyment for writers to stay consistent with the overall established Trek universe. However, it does do harm for many of us, to throw away continuity. What I mean is, we should care that some viewers care, even if we don't personally.

How do we know that if Picard returns it will be the prime universe? I'm sure that if he does come back he'll validate events in the DSC reality just to stick two fingers up at us fans who don't accept what the suits want us to!

What I want is for them to acknowledge that Discovery exists in a different universe, though one that follows a relatively similar history to the original. This doesn't have to be a bad thing, it gives them a lot more freedom to do new things and even fully reimagine old characters. Meanwhile, the Picard series will be fully prime universe (yes, with a few visual changes), so it'll basically be a win-win.

By my count there are no less than six different versions of ST:

-NBC/Classic (TOS and TAS)
-Roddenberry Trek (TOS pilots, The Motion Picture and early TNG)
-Bennett/Meyer Trek (remaining TOS feature films)
-Berman Trek (remainder of TNG, DS9~ENT and TNG feature films)
-Kelvin movies (remains to be seen in Tarantino falls here or becomes a separate entity)
-CBS Trek (STD, whatever next)

Interesting take, mostly similar to how I see it, though I generally split TMP and early TNG (though they are similar), and I'd also separate Enterprise S4 since it was more "Coto era" than Berman. It's debatable if I'd also separate DS9 and S3 of Enterprise, since it's still Berman but much less episodic. Still, I do think CBS/DSC takes more liberties with the established universe than the other "prime" versions do.

Oh, Enterprise is very much the prime universe, especially since in the episode "These Are The Voyages...." it takes place on the Enterprise-D.

This is very well-said. 'These are the Voyages...' retconned all of Enterprise to be nothing more than Riker playing Captain Proton on the holodeck, for which I'm personally grateful.

I think attention to detail in the worldbuilding actually results in better individual stories. Just one example making the effort to have Tom Paris actually be Locarno instead of Locarno-Clone would have probably resulted in a better character on Voyager. In early Voyager he would have had a concrete background there for the writers to work with instead of a vague thing with his father. It results in more solid stories for the character and that would have benefitted even new viewers who never watched TNG.

Okay I recall him. Me I think I am a little more curious about this Charlie Reynolds guy who Sisko says likes to "Swing for the Fences" which makes him sound like a kind of rebel type who takes risks.
