Does Cruise really have a cameo or not?

Spock will say "Shall we get underway Captain?"

Kirk will reply "Let's make like Tom and Cruise."

Spock will raise and eyebrow and a dark-haired ensign appearing to be in his late 40s will say "Aye sir, Warp 6," and wink at the camera.

'Tom Criuse: The Actor' doesn't bother me, but 'Tom Cruise: The Person' seems to turn me off...

...I was all ready to pay to see MI:3 in the movie theater, but Tom Cruise's wacky antics leading up to the opening of that film totally turned me off to it at that time. I eventually watched it on DVD several months later (after the "Cruise weirdness factor" died down) and somewhat enjoyed it.

If Tom Cruise is in this, but stays out of the Public limelight and keeps his mouth shut about this film, then a cameo by him should not be a problem.

Tom Cruise does tend to surprise me. I'll expect a bad performance, but he always comes through. I guess I've been influenced by his off screen antics, and I expect a freak, but, as I said he manages to do very well.

I don't see how a delusional bigoted actor who wants to save the world by making it all scientology would be good for star trek

He is--or at least was--an enormous box-office draw. Irrespective of what people think of him personally, having a "major" star in Star trek in any capacity would help make it look new and different from the stogy old Trek that died from terminal uncool.

A Tom Cruise cameo would be OK. I have no problems with him as an actor or person. I mean he's no stranger in real life than some of us would be perceived.

Maybe he's not strange in real life, but he was certainly acting strangely in public in the weeks leading up to the release of MI:3. Since that's all I have to go by, I'd have said at that time that he was pretty damn strange.

If my life happened to be in the public eye at that same time, I don't think anyone would have perceived me as strange.

Personally, I always enjoyed cameos. It would be better if they had some trek-related ones though...

He will play Trellane...

I realize you said this in jest, but that's actually not bad casting.

Not that I think Trelane should be in this -- or any -- Star Trek film, but ya know, if Cruise could strike that balance between absurdity and believabilty (like John Travolta did in Hairspray), he possibly could be a very good Trelane. Seriously.

Didn't Paramount can his ass?

That doesn't mean that Bad Robot can't employ him in a film and pay him scale (or more) for appearing in a movie. Paramount just bought out his contract as a member of their "stable" because of his lunatic goings on and his questionable public comments. Had he not done his couch gymnastics on Oprah he would have been okay with Sumner Redstone.

However, if you were JJ Abrams, who would you want to retain for a couple short cameos, especially if you were changing the timeline to one in which Gary Mitchell and Elizabeth Dehner survive?

Tom Cruise, get out of the Closet!!!!
