This. The tone needs to fit the portion of the story being told since this is to be a 15-episode story arc. If every episode has the same tenor, it will be boring as hell and not worth watching. So the answer to your poll is "yes". It needs to be lighter and darker and all the myriad shades in between. No opinion.
The show should be whatever it is.
It seems to me gritty is a word often (ab)used in Hollywood. These days nothing can be good if it's not "gritty." Another term they love to use is "organic." They are on my personal black list of words that annoy me.Green has admitted in one of the interviews that the show is gritty, so we have a confirmation of this beyond just the trailers.
I have two problems with this
a) I like to clearly see what's going on. In real world people turn on the lights and they should do it in StarTrek. I don't want to have to tune my brightness on the projector by 50% and diluting the colors in process.
b) Darkness is often code for gritty and gritty is code for shitty. If it's going to be depressing and dystopian, I'll treat it just like every other *code word* show - I won't watch it.
That's way too much to hope for based on dialog we've heard, but I would love that tooSome want a darker, grittier show. Some want a more lighthearted, humorous approach.
I, on the other hand, demand dark humor.
