I think based on the trailers, interviews, etc. everyone has an impression about the tone of the series now. Do you like it the way it is or is the series not dark or light enough for your taste? Please vote!

I don't have a problem with a dark or a light Star Trek as long as the stories are good. But I don't think we have a clue to this series yet based on what we've seen.

If it's TO dark and gritty with no humor at all I'll soon lose interest anyway.

It's like, how much more black could this be? And the answer is none. None more black. ;)

I'd like for it to be dark sometimes, and light sometimes, and dark sometimes when it doesn't seem like it should be, and light sometimes when it's inappropriate but still somehow a relief. In other words, I'd like for it to be just like real people living real life. Just in the future. And with cool future tech (and the implications of it on those people).

I'm not sure the trailers and little snippets from interviews accurately reflect the tone of the show. I don't mind darker as such, but I would prefer a lighter show. If Discovery is really good it can be both and make it work. Fingers crossed.

Green has admitted in one of the interviews that the show is gritty, so we have a confirmation of this beyond just the trailers.

I have two problems with this
a) I like to clearly see what's going on. In real world people turn on the lights and they should do it in StarTrek. I don't want to have to tune my brightness on the projector by 50% and diluting the colors in process.

b) Darkness is often code for gritty and gritty is code for shitty. If it's going to be depressing and dystopian, I'll treat it just like every other *code word* show - I won't watch it.

No opinion.

The show should be whatever it is.
This. The tone needs to fit the portion of the story being told since this is to be a 15-episode story arc. If every episode has the same tenor, it will be boring as hell and not worth watching. So the answer to your poll is "yes". It needs to be lighter and darker and all the myriad shades in between.

SyFy currently has 3 "Dark and Gritty" Sci-fi series running.

So yea, they really should have gone more towards the TOS/TNG hopeful and light model of a show if they wanted to stand out.

It seems to me gritty is a word often (ab)used in Hollywood. These days nothing can be good if it's not "gritty." Another term they love to use is "organic." They are on my personal black list of words that annoy me.

When I envisioned a modern "look" to prequel trek, I didn't think it would measure up, but it wound up looking almost exactly like what I was expecting, except even more cinematic. It's contrasty, blue-tinged and photographed incredibly well, and of course, has the benefit of being filmed in 4k(3.2K) and shown generally in full 1080 HD.

Gritty is relative. Star wars was considered "gritty" but it looks like an old Disney movie compared to Alien, Mad Max or Blade Runner. In the scheme of things, DSC looks grittier than even DS9, but not overly gritty, like Walking Dead, or even some of the Expanse.

Lighter or darker than what? Sorry i am confused as to what our baseline is that I am supposed to be comparing it to. Darker than old Trek? Sure. lighter than the trailer we have seen? Sure.

The trailer made it look too dark IMO but I want something darker than TNG.

But...I haven't actually seen DSC so who knows. I am just going on my general impression from the trailer so far.

Some want a darker, grittier show. Some want a more lighthearted, humorous approach.

I, on the other hand, demand dark humor.

That's way too much to hope for based on dialog we've heard, but I would love that too
