Some of the TOS ones were designed to recall the lighted status boards on real ships. I wish the Discovery versions looked more functional.

It's a little like Galaxy Quest, just reproducing stuff that may or may not serve a purpose
- or might be the Omega 13.

There's no reason to devote story time to explaining a set decoration. This was something Roddenberry made a point of in the TOS bible and the like -- a TV cop doesn't stop to give the audience a lecture about how his car or his gun works, he just uses them. They're everyday parts of his world. The characters know what they're for, so it'd be bad writing to have them lecture each other about it.
