Do you think LGBT characters will feature more prominently?

I'd love to have some Admiral show up and its some wacky jellyfish looking creature, then have Kirk treat it like his childhood hero. Admiral X'zzzzzrt saved the most lives in the captain's chair in Federation history and was beloved by every crew that served under it. Basically the Chesty Puller of Starfleet.

Great idea, I noticed in Enterprise history there has only been one alien Captain..speciesm or what!

The idea that you can't be in a relationship with your subordinate is hopefully something we can leave behind by the 23rd century. We're getting there already, there are challenges under the Equality Act for all non military scenarios.

Well, there's two prongs.

1. It's an unfair distribution of power, or an unbalancing of necessary power distribution.

2. 5 years in deep space with no one to love and your virginity will heal back up.

I doubt the Vulcans, Andorians, Tellarites and all the other species will allow Starfleet to operate 100% on human customs. After all if Winona Kirk can get knocked up on the USS Kelvin than non fraternisation is definitely not an issue. You cannot expect to send sentient beings into space for 5 years and live like monks.

Sometimes there are absolute rules against fraternization.

Other times, you can date people your own rank, although the higher you get on the totem, the less people there are of the same rank that you are to fraternize with.

What was Picard's take on this in Lessons?

He ####ed over her career, booting her off his boat, because Jean-Luc couldn't order a woman he was into to her death.

At the time, it was seen as the responsible thing to do, now however it just seems like assault.

He chickened out, years later Riker married Troi and served on the USS Titan. Darrin shoud have stood her ground, Picard's hangups were not her fault. But how else can TPTB not flirt with the idea of a Captain Beverly Picard (they chickened out on that one too)

i still remember the the episode in theory
were the original line guinan was supposed to say to data was
"when it works between a man and a woman..."
whoopi went nuts(a long time LGBT supporter)
and got it changed to "two people".
was berman addicted to the binary or what?

And it was great that she did!
There was also talk about having a same sex couple holding hands in that scene, but it was vetoed. Shame.

They always talk how they wanted to do this and that regarding this issue, but some higher authority wouldn't let them. I'd like to know who that person was. I doubt Paramount executives payed so close attention to Trek that they would have cared. It was someone in the Star Trek team. Possibly Berman.

I've never bought into the "Executives wouldn't let us have gay characters" thing. The 'suits' get blamed for every creative decision that gets criticised later, but especially by the later Trek series, if they'd wanted a gay character, they could have had one. Buffy had an openly gay main cast member in 1999, the same year as DS9 season 7.

Different networks, targeting different demographics for different sponsors.

Weird variables that we don't understand.

This is a quote I read recently form Berman which was innocent but horrible.

"We really intended on having a gay episode, we thought it would be cool, but we ran out of time, and didn't get around to it."

I've heard Berman was the one blocking gay characters.
Ran out of time? How many years did he need? I don't buy that at all.

Well, considering the fact that LGBT characters are common on both network and streaming television, I cannot imagine that there will not be one or more in the new Trek series - perhaps even the commanding officer or first officer will be human and LGBT.

I agree. Yet despite all this progress the new movies haven't made the slightest effort at improving LGBT diversity.
A gay captain or first officer would be amazing. The time to be excited over a one episode token appearance is long past. If we don't get a regular main character who is gay I'm going to be pissed.

Movies are more of a business than TV which would allow more creative freedom. There is probably a room of suits who approve of anything in the movies since Paramount is terrified of scaring off the teenage boy demographic.

It seems unconscionable that whenever the Captain gives the order for ramming speed that that isn't permission to start a ship wide 40 second orgy where everyone can die with no particular mouth in general massaging their private parts, or something that tastes maybe a little too cheesy between their lips.

If it was the 1701-D, Riker would stand up, "If I'm going out I'm going out happy, come on Troi." Along the way he grabs Worf and asks if he can borrow Data's arm. Then there is just a really awkward scene with Picard and Wesley staring at each other. Data goes to say something but they tell him to shut up as they smack into the ship.
