Do you think LGBT characters will feature more prominently?

I've never seen the 100. That does jog my memory that I'd heard the show teased with a little bit of girl/girl bisexuality. Is it well done and a prominent on going thing? TV and sci fi in general love to do a little gratuitous girl/girl action to please their straight male target audience, but rarely actually commit to developing the relationship.

It's telling that it is a bisexual female getting exposure, the safest least controversial kind of LGBT character they could do.

I consider it well done, although I don't count myself an authority, and it is an ongoing thing - one of the most important relationships in the show's second season, whose nature goes beyond the romantic to the nature of leadership between these two characters.

But when Enterprise aired its last episode, the idea of any genre series having its lead character in such a relationship was still unthinkable. My point is more that a lot has changed; not that there isn't still a way to go.

We were "explicitly" informed that Riker was straight when we were told in a voice over (Deanna's thoughts) that he had a past relationship with another character who was female.
And from that, you assume he is straight, rather than pan or bi? I mean, you might be right - but from some of Riker's flirty behavior, even occasionally with male characters, I always figured he was bi with a strong preference for women.
Other minor gay characters have shown up in Arrow. The most prominent LGBT character, not surprisingly, is a hot bisexual female, the least threatening LGBT character possible.
I think that might be the ONLY way Nyssa al Ghul qualifies as "least threatening".

Curtis Holt on Arrow is a black gay man, as well.

But is Curtis prominent? He mentions an off screen husband every now and then, but he feels like a pretty minor character so far.

Unless they diverge radically from what DC has done with the character previously, Curtis is a superhero called Mr. Terrific. So I suspect his prominence will increase - if not on Arrow, then possibly on DC Legends at some point.
I'm not sure that needed a spoiler tag, but better safe than sorry. :)

They should. I hope they do. But I hope they're not exploited as fodder for stories and drama. Like Uhura in TOS, just let the character exist in the world without shining a spotlight on things. If it comes up that two men or two women are in a relationship, so be it, but don't make a big deal out of it.

Depends on who's funding it. Roddenberry had to go through all sorts of censorship with TOS because NBC was giving him money. As a creative, you don't necessarily get to produce what you want to...you have to satisfy those who back you. It's a horrible situation.

I'd like to think that because the culture is more receptive to the LGBT community, that it would happen but the truth is, you have to accommodate your backers.

The latest news is that the Titans series is now not happening. I'm pretty sad about that.

Well, I'm not that big a fan of TT so I'm not too upset about it but sorry it's not happening for you though. I wonder what this new potential Flash spin-off they're talking about is then.

It's about time there were properly Lgbt characters in Trek outside the books and fan films (Hidden Frontier did it properly first then Phase II followed)

On screen there may have been small instances (Intendant Kira, Trills) but it's always been skirted around

I don't think a gay trek character should be done just to tick the box - they should be made interesting and the arc meaningful

I actually disagree with that! Every character should be interesting and every arc should be meaningful in some way.

Sexuality should be incidental and a non-issue in the Star Trek universe so making a character gay to tick a box could be the better approach for it. Create a cast of interesting characters first and then throw darts or flip coins to decide gender, sexuality etc.

I don't want a character who is interesting because he's gay, I want a character who is interesting and just happens to be gay.

I think I conveyed myself wrong you said what I meant!

Gay should not be the most important thing about a character, ones sexuality is not their most important aspect. But I absolutely think a character in a same sex relationship needs to be done properly on Trek.

It's more accurate to say that you haven't noticed all the gay characters that have been present during the last 550 hours of Star Trek.

That's a great answer, but outside of all the evil bisexual women in the Mirror Universe, and maybe Jadzia Dax and Lenora Kahn, what other gay characters have I missed?

Almost all of the unnamed characters, half off camera, who never have any lines.

That's nearly a dozen LGBT characters, every episode since 1967.

The only main characters who didn't get (or show interest in) a heterosexual love interest (that I can recall) were Guinan, Pulaski and Garak.

Can't think of many others.
