Do you think it'll be a meaty role for Nimoy?

Assuming he's in the movie (we'll see on thursday), the man's been in retirement for about 15 years or so.

He turned down Generations as "there was no Spock part in that movie". One wonders if the potential role in the new movie is more substantial.

We all suspect it might be a glorified cameo, but do we really think he would drag himself out of retirement for a voiceover? For 5 mins at the end/start of the movie? This film has been touted as being about James T. Kirk. I find it interesting that the Spock part has been (supposedly) cast but we havent heard too much about Kirk yet.

Is the focus shifting? Did Shat price himself out of the movie and they were forced into some sort of rewrite? I still think Kirk will be the focus, but I just can't see Nimoy bothering unless there was really something for him to do.

Thoughts?

My thoughts are that a "meaty" part has very little to do with "how many minutes of face time" are involved. It has to do with the emotional impact of the appearance. If Nimoy wants to do this, it isn't necessarily because he's going to get 1 1/2 hours of on-screen face time. It's because he read the story, saw it as being a good story that he wanted to have a part in telling, and saw his role as being crucial to the story. In "Generations," the part of Spock might well have been a "throw away, ticket-punch" appearance... and that would likely have had little to do with how many minutes he was going to be on-screen. Hell, KIRK in "Generations" was completely unnecessary and was only present so that B&B could "pass the torch to OUR guy" (aka Picard).

Make sense?

Wouldn't this appearance just be a passing of the torch, too??

It makes no sense to have either appear.. It just reeks of "I remember it like it was yesterday...yesterday..yesterday" ripple fade to flashback and...scene!

Nimoy wouldn't do it unless he felt the role was worthy and he had faith in the film and film makers. We know Shatner would do anything for money, but Nimoy is more selective.

but the focus of the film is on the new cast

Agreed.

It would have to be at least of some sort of substance or Leonard Nimoy wouldn't consider it, especially these days.

It can't be meaty, Spock is a veggie-eater.

...crickets...

No one understands my deep humor. Sigh.

In any case, his role might not have to be big, but it may tie into young spock in an important way, and that may be good enough to Nimoy if he likes young spock's part.

Nimoy's retired from acting, right? I can't see him coming out of retirement for a glorified cameo. It must have more substance than that even if it's just a few minutes of screentime.

Agreed

At the time of Generations, I recall Nimoy saying that he had no objection in principle to a cameo. As, used correctly, a cameo can be very effective. But he didn't want to "walk through the set and wave".

Possibly a death scene towards the end of the film? Quite possibly he would come out of retirement for that as it would be closure for the character - at least where Nimoy is concerned.

Well, you know the old saying, "There are no small roles, only small actors."

I doubt that minutes of screen time is the issue for Nimoy. "Meaty" probably means significance to the story and to the character, not necessarily how long he's on screen.

Anthony Hopkins won an Oscar (deservedly so) for "Silence of the Lambs", and when asked, most people say he's what they remember about that movie. But he was only in, a small portion of actual screen time. What was it? Like 15 minutes or so? I can't remember. But he was such a strong presence in the film, he's there even when he's not.

I could see Nimoy lending that kind of weight to his appearance, even if it was only a dozen minutes of screen time. He has the chops to do that. He might even see that as a fitting close to his career.

IMHO.

If I didn't agree with you, I'd have to punch you in the face.

Come to think of it, I may still have to. ;)

What about Skon, spocks grandfather?

While he is never mentioned in the old series, it was never stated that he was alive or dead. Considering he translated surok work in the mid 22nd century , it is quite possible he is still alive(albeit quite elderly) in the mid 23rd century, at least until spock goes to the academy.

I think it would be neat if he played Sarek. Seeing what happened when Spock decided to go to Starfleet and not pursue a life of the Kholinar. It would be interesting to see Spock play his own father. It really would bring things full circle.

It was announced that Nimoy would be playing "old" Spock. Aside from his recollections of this early days on the Enterprise, I hope there is some clues to what Spock's fate was when we last saw him on Romulus. If we really want to bring it full circle, it would be VERY nice to tie up the Reunification with the Romulan change-of-heart after the Dominion War and Nemesis (whether you like it or not). It would bookend Spock's long career serving the Federation nicely.

My gut tells me don't count on it.

Another thought has just crossed my mind: Has it been confirmed yet that this movie is a prequel? Maybe it's about Spock in the 24th century, with just a tiny flashback to the TOS era?

AFAIK, nothing has been confirmed in regards to the plot. JJ Abrams and co. have been very hush-hush about it.
