I have experienced the invisibility. I think it is a self-created aura, for the most part. If you project that you're being ignored, you'll be ignored. It takes a certain active participation to be in the flow.

On the other hand, having a beautiful woman on one's arm does make it easier to cross a street. Ahhh, fringe benefits.
