Do you remember joining TrekBBS?

I was just thinking about when I first joined, and saw from my profile that it was September 19th, 2006. I remember I was still in college at Kent State University, well before my years in D.C. or Japan--- I lived in this great single dorm near the library. I had been into Star Trek for some time, but I realized I had very few friends that I could talk about it with-- so I randomly googled "Star Trek forums" and signed up! I know for many of you, reaching toward 5 years with roughly 1000 posts a year still makes me a newbie :). Do you remember joining? Were you referenced or was it a random search like mine? Share! :mallory:

I do remember when I joined. It was a Friday night in January, 2002. Before hand I had found a few other message boards, as I saw an advertisement in a magazine. And then I found this one.

I remember perfectly. It was this very day last year, only a little earlier.

I'd been on a constant Trek diet for about 2 years and begun showing all the signs that my interest in all things Trek was turning into full-fledged fandom. I'd known of TrekBBS for a while, I'd read that it was the largest online Star Trek fan community and all, and on June 7 last year, I finally decided it was time for me to take the next step and become an active part of that community. So I joined. I consider June 7, 2010 to be a very good day.;)

Checking my profile and the calendar on my laptop. March 29, 2006 was a Wednesday, and five weeks and a day before I met my wife.

I'm pretty sure it was a boring evening at home back in Cincinnati.

I was a freshman in high school and Star Trek had been something I'd gotten into about a year before. I was reading Jim Wright's reviews, he had a link to TrekToday which had 'interesting posts' or something from the TrekBBS, which occasionally I'd read. Eventually I signed up.

I didn't say much for a while, became prolific briefly around 2007, and then my posting went back to a trickle.

It was when the Terok Nor series of books was released (2008), and I was googling for information about the books. I forget what exactly I was looking for, but then I found that James Swallow was posting here and answering people's questions about the book, in the Treklit section of the forum.

Not long after that, the idea for The Thirteenth Order (my fanfic novel-in-progress) popped into my head, and I was here for what seems to be for good.

I don't recall exactly what I was looking for when I found this place, but I stayed to read Zeke's Five Minute Enterprise reviews.

My first post was a comment on his Five Minute "Fight or Flight", which coincidentally happened to be a bugged thread, the infamous "5:31pm".

SPOCKED has the nerdiest memory about joining, if I recall correctly.

Me, I never joined. One day I woke up in here and haven't been able to find a way out.

I do, indeed: I was searching the web for images of what the ship was going to look like for the new not yet aired "Enterprise" series, and I found an image posted in the TBBS Art forum (by Vektor, if memory serves.) After I looked around the Board for a few minutes, my eyes went wide and I felt like I'd landed in Oz: a whole virtual world populated by fellow Trek geeks. I was in heaven.

Especially when that world is filled with others who find things like this amusing:

"Trekbbs and Trekbbs! What is trekbbs?!"

:p

I just can't believe how long ago it was.

I joined in November last year and I think it was just a random search. I'm glad I found it though.

Yikes, just checked my join date March 2001, Did I fall into a time warp or has 10 years really passed?

I mostly was on TrekWeb circa 1999. And one day, someone (was it Samuel T. Cogley?) talked about the Trek BBS and how it was much better. I lurked for a couple of years and then I finally joined in 2004.

I joined about 6 years ago, but I was a lurker for several years before that. If I remember right, my first exposure was while I was still working on my Master's degree because I have memories of sitting in the cubicle in that lab reading TrekBBS. That was almost 10 years ago, so I must have lurked for at least 4 years. I joined because there was a discussion going on that I wanted to comment on. Since then, I've posted at a fairly consistent trickle.

As I remember, I found it by reading Trek news on TrekToday.
