Do You Know Anyone "Famous"?

I just recently found out I know a Playboy centerfold. Since she was one before a lot of people here were born I doubt many would know her name though.
Her name might be familiar to me. I was born the same year that Playboy magazine got started. And I like to consider myself something of an authority on naked women.

In one of my college film classes, my professor/advisor brought in a guest speaker - Irving Kirshner (that would be the director of The Empire Strikes Back).

I certainly hope you weren't calling him Irving the whole time you were talking to him. That's would've been embarrassing.

I was in the same school but a year below former NFL player Derek Andersen.

My uncle is famous in the computer world. He works at Carnegie-Mellon University and for the DoD. He was one of the "VIPs" placed on Air Force 2 and taken to Florida to be with the president during September 11.

I used to be famous. In Japan. I'm not kidding.

I grew up with and went to high school with a professional golfer who has won several major tournaments on the PGA tour and whose name many would recognize.

My brother is a better person to ask this question though - he is also a pro golfer (he is still close friends with this guy we went to high school with) and knows a lot of other professional golfers as well - including Jack Nicklaus (my brother and Jackie Nicklaus were college roommates at Chapel Hill). My brother also knew a lot of other athletes who were at Chapel Hill at the same time as he was - one of which was Michael Jordan.

But me personally? - only the one pro golfer. Unless you count:

Iditarod mushers. I knew several of those guys when I lived in Anchorage. Those guys are celebrities...but really only in Alaska.

Tommy Moe - Olympic Downhiller and Gold Medalist. I was in a bike racing club with him in Anchorage and chatted with him a few times at various club-related events. But I wouldn't say we were 'friends' or anything. Met him more than once...but it was all within the confines of the Arctic Bike Club activities.

EDIT after reading other people's posts:

Now, if we are talking about 'brushes with greatness' where you only met the person once...that is an entirely different matter. My two most famous brushes with greatness are:

Bruce Springsteen (I had backstage passes at one of his concerts and got to talk with him for a while)
Former President Jimmy Carter (met him at one of his book signings here in Atlanta)

In addition to these, I've met several other best-selling authors at book signings and actually partied with the crew of Airforce One in Moscow, circa 1995 (then-President Clinton was in town for the major VE Day anniversary).

And then there are all the scifi actors met at cons - the usual suspects - everyone from Shatner to David Boreanaz.

But IMO, 'brushes with greatness' such as these are not the same as knowing someone/growing up with someone.

Just remembered another one. I went to school (same years) with an athlete who represented the UK in the Olympics twice.

I didn't really know him although one of my mates is friendly with him.

Oh, I forgot... while I can't say I 'know' him. I have talked to Josh Hartnett on a couple of occasions. He frequented the Blockbuster I worked at several years ago.

To be perfectly honest I can't the conversations were anything more than: "I'd like to rent these movies and pay the late fees on the account." Nice guy, but I hate the majority of his movies.

Today, at a coffeehouse in the city, I saw former DC mayor Anthony Williams waiting for his order. I was sitting at a chair right across from the counter. Does that count?

These may be reaching a bit, but my mother’s first cousin (does that make her my second cousin once removed?) is pop psychologist Susan Forward (née Sondra Dorn). Not exactly a household name, though.

And my mom once had her portrait sketched by Don Bachardy. Not exactly a household name either, but well known in art circles.

When I was younger my cousin's family rented out their spare cottage to Michael Seater and his mom. He's the star of such illustrious pablum as Life With Derek and 18 to Life. We ended up looking after him a few times when the adults went out since we're a few years older. He was a nice enough kid I guess.

But I haven't talked to him in probably ten years and his shows are fucking terrible so I don't think about it too much.

I exchanged a couple of e-mails with Roger Ebert once about 7 years ago. On a website or a newsgroup someone ragged on Ebert for never liking any of the Trek movies and that he hated sci-fi in general and I responded that he had and did and then Mr. Ebert e-mailed me to thank me for pointing out that he had liked a couple. I wrote him back and he wrote me again. I forget what he said but he recommended that I watch the movie Dark City...I've never gotten around to doing it yet.
