Do You Know Anyone "Famous"?

^^ Hey, that Shirley Boone one is a winner here as it's a pure Trek one!!!

EDIT: I just googled her...is she related to Pat Boone too?!?

My cousin is an actor. He's been in 50 or 60 TV shows and movies, but around here would probably be best known for having been in 3 of Joss Whedon's shows. Other things of note would be Seinfeld, Scrubs, Curb, Being John Malkovich.

I know two Nobel winners - I used to work for Carol Greider, who won last year for the discovery of Telomerase, and I dealt frequently with Peter Agre, who won in 2003 for discovering aquaporins.

Err.. me mam dated Bob Carolgees for a bit, but that'll only mean anything to a small percentage of 30yo + Brits.

This is Epic.

Did she dump him when she realised he takes that dog everywhere...? :shifty:

I know a few people who've done the odd niche TV series or written one or two reasonably well-selling books. If you extend it to "across the room acquaintances" (you know, friend-of-a-friend, met once or twice over a dinner, that sort of thing) the number's higher, but that would rather be cheating for this thread. :D

No,
I do know someone who hung around with Sebastian Bach (Skid Row) and said to him man your good you'll go somewhere, then had his name in the credits of an early Album.

thats as close as I got.

It’s Shirley Bonne.

Shirley Boone (née Foley) is Pat Boone’s wife.

In one of my college film classes, my professor/advisor brought in a guest speaker - Irving Kirshner (that would be the director of The Empire Strikes Back). Got to sit next to him, ask him a couple of questions, listen to him speak. That was cool. I ran into Ted Koppel a couple of times at work while he was producing quarterly specials/documentaries for Discovery. I've met/seen several Trek actors back when I used to go to conventions a long time ago. Most recently, I got to see Lost exec producer Carlton Cuse when he came to give a lecture at work.

So I've seen/met famous people, but I can't say that I really know them.

I've met various famous people in passing, most recently Alexander Armstrong and Ben Miller during their nationwide tour. I have also met (very briefly) one or two noted names in the world of medicine, and have met journalist, doctor and celebrity panel show regular Dr. Phil Hammond twice.

As for "knowing" anyone who has been famous, there was this one person I knew quite well at university who was the subject of a 4-part documentary on television not too long ago. He's got big things ahead of him.

I was an acquaintance of a boy in school a few years my junior, who would later become a noted amateur and professional golfer - winning a few tournaments along the way.

I was also fortunate to have known the one-time Apothecary to Her Majesty's household at Holyroodhouse before he died. No-one could recite Tam O'Shanter like he could. :(

Finally, while I don't know him personally, my cousin is married to Australian cricket writer and cricketwithballs.com blogger Jarrod "Jrod" Kimber.

I've met more Trek/sci-fi people I can count, at conventions and such, but I won't count most of them. Nor will I count a bunch of my Facebook friends, such as Johnny Depp and Julie Andrews. However, since I've never met any of them personally, they don't count.
However, I've gotten quite familiar (Not in a nasty way!) with Herbert Jefferson Jr. from the original Battlestar Galactica. When I see him at conventions, he greets me by name, asks about my kids whom he's met. Hell of a nice guy, and an absolute gentleman.
But to say we are good pals would be a real exageration.

I also went to high school with Cuba Gooding Jr. However, although he knew friends of mine in the theater department, we only met once in that time, and if he ever heard my name today, he'd probably ask "SBK Who?"

Well, when I brought up Mike Wolfe earlier, I've known him for quite a few years (we first met when my previous company was building a Web site about the Iowa Great River Road for the Iowa Department of Transportation, and I was traveling to various cities, getting tourist information), and I eventually produced the short videos that he sent to various networks to get the show sold. He never thought anything would come of it, but I liked the idea and we put them together. (Back then, his longtime live-in girlfriend was filling the "stay at home and generate leads" role that Danielle Colby-Cushman does on the show.) Before I left Iowa earlier this year, we ran into each other at least once a month and met for coffee, lunch or dinner, just to shoot the shit. I also trekked down there earlier this month, as he was shooting an episode in the city where I used to live.

That's how I define "know."

Sounds like me and Jody Watley, she was a senior and I was a freshman and she was the featured dancer on Soul Train and about to go on the road with Shalamar. I remember her talking to me in the school auditorium during rehearsals for something. I ran into her 25 years later after her career had died. I knew her but I was just another guy.

How strongly is "know" being defined here (so I know when I make my own reply here)?

Biblical sense or it didn't happen. :p

Well, there was this one time me and some guy named Noah built this ark.

We put like, I guess two of every animal we knew of on Earth. The amonia from the animal shit after a few weeks, made him high. So high he couldn't remember where the fuck he left the ark. He was like, "Dude, where's my ark?".

I just recently found out I know a Playboy centerfold. Since she was one before a lot of people here were born I doubt many would know her name though.

My girlfriend though, like a lot of SoCal girls, has a ton of stories about interacting with celebrities including having dinner with a famous author of a famous TOS episode.

I'm friends with someone who is one of the head writers for an HBO show. He's not famous (yet) although most writers live in relative anonymity. But his show is extremely well-regarded.

I was best friends with a semi-famous actress back in high school. We roomed together a couple times, dated each others boyfriends, basically did everything together...oh, the stories i could share.
Over the years we lost contact with each other. A couple years ago we connected again on facebook, and chat once in awhile. Mostly reliving the past. Good times.
