Do you know any Space animated films?

I'm going to admit to liking Rene Laloux's three deeply weird animated features, which all take place in outer space: Fantastic Planet and Gandahar, which are largely anchored in surreal, dreamscape like planets, and Time Masters, which is more of a straight up space opera (and a collaboration with Jean Giraud).

Weird, peculiar stuff, not to everyone's taste, and only Time Masters is child friendly, but memorable all the same.

I didn't realize Laloux had made two other sf movies -- I've only seen Fantastic Planet, which was weird as hell, but fascinating to behold. I'll have to look for the other two.

Titan A.E. isn't any good, but I suppose it counts.

final fantasy is only one film or is it a series of films?
Starchaser: The Legend of Orin looks nice (by the trailer)
thanks

Not really a space movie, but anytime animated sci-fi comes up, The Iron Giant much be mentioned.

Not necessarily space, but sci-fi: Nausicaä of the Valley of Wind, a brilliant film. (Patrick Stewart is in the English dub.)

For some European-flavoured, seriously mind-bending sci-fi animation, go take a look at René Laloux's films:

  • Fantastic Planet
  • Time Master
  • Gandahar
edit: Whoops, I just looked at the first page and only now realized that the Laloux films have already been mentioned. So - seconded. (Or fourthed, or whatever.)

Final Fantasy is a RPG video game series (mainly on the NES, SNES, and every Sony console) that has two films. Each Final Fantasy game (with a few exceptions) is in a seperate continuity and are standalone stories, although the games are related by other elements.

The first film is a standalone sci-fi story (like most of the games).

The second film is based on the seventh game in the series, and is a sequel to it. You might want to at least read a summary of the game before watching it.

Despite not being a fan of traditional animation, I enjoyed the animated component of the Chronicles of Riddick, called Dark Fury. Although it's shorter than a full length film.

the 2nd film is also scifi or fantasy?
its a space film? (in english?)
thanks :)

You might try legends of galactic heros if you have a lot of time to kill.

I second that. It has two main characters, both great battle strategists. Neither are evil, just destined to fight on opposite sides. This series is basically an epic story made up of a series of battles led by either the protagonists or the huge supporting cast that fight on both sides.

Yang is my favorite character. A brilliant tactician, mild-tempered and humble, he was meant more to be a historian and teacher rather than to lead a war. He's also on the side of the underdog.

So great battles, character development, humor, politics, philosophy, and characters to root for. Also lots of grey on both sides.

a few more reccomendations
E.Y.E.S. of mars
Gall Force
The Venus Wars
Adieu, Galaxy Express 999
Memories, 3 animated short stories, one set in space, you can get it at big lots for like $3
Macross Plus
Wings of Honneamise
Emeralds
that Daft Punk/Leiji Matsumoto collab made it to DVD somewhere I think

There's also macross: Do You Remember love? Basically, it's an adaptation of the Macross TV series but with better animation and some twists to the story. To my knowledge, it's never been given a proper English release-there's a really, really bad dub out of it, though, called Clash of the Bionoids or something like it.

The latest Yamato animated movie has a lot of nice space scenery in it.

Starship Operators is one of the better space sagas, with an unusual story and some real space tactics.

Possibly the best of all is Heroic age. A space opera on the scale of Brin's Uplift or Niven's Known Space.

These are more along the lines of what I think you may be looking for. There is CG in these, a lot of the hardware is 3d/traditional animation. There are no totally CG "space movies" that are even close to these.

All I can think of in the category of 3D computer-animated films set in space are a couple of poorly-received kids' films I've heard of but haven't seen, The Battle for Terra and one that I think was called Planet 51. Oh, and wasn't there another one called Space Chimps or something? I gather that was even worse-received. On the other hand, there was the Jimmy Neutron, Boy Genius pilot film that got a theatrical release. A fair portion of it took place in space, and it wasn't bad, though of course it was a kid-oriented comedy.
