Do You Generally Believe Posters on the BBS?

I tend to give people the benefit of the doubt -- which I probably ought to have stopped doing ages ago -- but, there it is. I usually believe people (except when they post their IQs) and ultimately it doesn't make that much difference in this venue whether or not people are being truthful. Much more important, as Holdfast said, is that they be entertaining!

I always tell the truth, though.

Yes, I've seen my share of suspicious posts (from people on other sites, not just the BBS) in terms of IQ, penis size, etc. I usually think, "Right, and I'm the Queen of England!"

Miss Chicken, I was wondering when someone was going to mention Ms. Tanaka.

Ms. Tanaka may have been a liar, but she was certainly entertaining.

I remember another poster lying about having brain surgery. After a little investigation, Jethro Elvis was able to call him on it. That was bad.

He (Admiral Electron), on the other hand, was far from entertaining.

I don't believe everyone. There are certain people I immediately assume are full of crap. There are others I just assume are duals of my favorite Scot (also always entertaining).

While we're on this topic...

CNN is reporting a case of someone impersonating a white supremacist and sending death threats on Facebook, here.

I'd like to think that people generally believe others when they post on a forum. Unfortunately, with spambots and trolls (etc.), this is becoming increasingly difficult nowadays.

I, for one, would hope that people believe that my posts are sincere, as I'm new here. It can sometimes be hard to be accepted into a new (online) community.

It depends on what on-line community you visit. Most of the TBBS/MISC regulars are friendly and, um, harmless. ;) You may even find a niche in this forum that suits you the most, like SFF, TV&M, or Lost, depending on your interest.

There's a poster that is active here who I believe is at least 10 years older than what he says.
:alienblush:
You goof!

I think most people will, unless they have some reason to think otherwise. :)

I lie a lot in my professional life to maintain that persona. I can't be arsed with the bullshit everywhere else.

Though it's the internet - I never take it too seriously.

After about 15 years online and on message boards you tend to get a feeling for people.

It's the way they write and about what that tends to give clues about their honesty.
Those who are the loudest and most agressive tend to be the biggest liars yet sometimes other liars do slip under the radar.

What is your impression of me? (assuming you have one)

You know, I was thinking about starting a discussion on how other people (IRL or on-line) perceived us. Based on the posts I've read from you, you seem to be a genuine/sincere guy who's pretty laid back. I think most of us can identify with those traits.

An Officer started a whole series of threads about that not that long ago. They were kind-of popular. :bolian:

By and large, I have no reason to not trust the folks who post here. If given a reason to distrust someone or if some seems like they have outrageous events happening in their lives constantly, I'll take it with a grain of salt, but for the most part, I'm ok with taking people at their word. Off the top of my head, there is one specific poster who I just don't believe period, but based on how his threads go I don't think anyone does.
