For different reasons. They were distinct, interesting studies in psychology, especially Nero in relation to Spock, Marcus in relation to Kirk.

As an Aussie, hearing this line from fellow Aussie, Eric Bana, it was such an unexpected delight. The line got a lovely response at the gala night I attended in Sydney. He made Nero such an atypical and dangerous Trek villain. Totally disarming.
I'll have to admit e ery time I see Sam I feel a little sick knowing where he's heading. He's actually a great character and I want to see him get more screen time. Sometimes I wish they would make this show a alternate reality Trek so characters fate like Sam's would be unknown.

That's the job of a prequel. These characters are now characters, not plot devices.

Then it did its job. I'd rather not see him die either but that's the beauty of developing a character in to a person is that he takes on value.
If the price is seeing him dead actually carries weight then more power to it.
What is interesting is if they ever show him die they can use the fact that he is now a real character to sort of add a extra layer to how he dies. We just knew him as a dead body on the floor being played by a actor that looked a lot like Shatner. Now though we could maybe see him have a heroic death were he sacrifices himself to save people, including his wife and son. He would still die but it would be a heroes death.

Alternative timeline Kirk3 lamented that Sam had died, and appears to have chosen La'an's timeline because Sam might live. We see why in this series. That's a lot more than brother Kirk got in TOS.
On SNW you probably won't.
Maybe not but with time travel and flash forwards and what not who knows what they might show us. Especially in the shows final season.
Receiving this news about Sam Kirk's fate was like a blow to the heart. He was such a cheerful, compassionate character who simply warmed our hearts with his presence. Many of us undoubtedly wished to see him more frequently in the series, and now the loss feels even heavier. But learning that his fate is even worse than that of Chekov makes this news even more difficult to bear. The loss of such a young life
I just watched Operation: Annihilate! and SNW has definitely made Sam's death hit home for me in a way it never had before.
That would be the most literal definition of unnecessary possible.
One does not do it because it is necessary. One does it because they can. Kind of like TNG giving Romulans bumpy foreheads.
IIRC, that was because someone felt there should be some visual way to distinguish Vulcans and Romulans.
