Do you fast forward through the theme song?

In answer to the OP, it depends.

If I'm just watching one or two episodes in isolation I'm usually content to let the theme music run. But if I'm "binge watching" a bunch of episodes together, then I generally skip of the theme sequences for the sake of missing the endless repetition.

I'd never do it on the movies though, for instance.

Yes. After a while even the best intros/theme songs get a little repetitive and boring. Except one...

OK that its great in a so bad its awesome 70's cheese spoof.

To be fair I find certain classic themes rather appealing to the extent that they never get boring to me. For ST DS9 and Voyager sit in that ballpark. And some of the movie scores. Other examples to me are the hardcore classic stuff like most of the Dr. Who themes, some of the Gerry Anderson's ones. And the truly classic 70's and 80's cheese like Knightrider, Airwolf, etc. Oh and the classic BSG march and Buck Rogers theme (bonus points for the obscure version with trippy lyrics). The ST TOS theme is mostly on my list, so long as I am not binge watching. I find third season gets a bit shrieky.

I always sit through the Enterprise theme. I cannot explain why. I objectively know that it is terrible... but I just can't look away. Like maybe this next time it will be better... What makes it worse is that one time IT WAS BETTER! Then it went back to normal. .. don't mind me I'll just be sitting over here in the corner muttering nasty things regarding Patch Adams and Mork from Ork! Bah!

Actually as an aside to this. Am I alone in coming to the realization that there just aren't anymore great TV openings anymore. No cool theme songs. They just get 2 seconds of expository with some dissonance to set the mood then gone,

What we need is a master. One to inspire us, We need Sheky Levi. We Need Mask, We Need Transformers, We need Power Rangers

I'd forgotten all about MASK. I don't remember the intro, I barely remember the cartoon at all just the toys. One of my friends had the big mountain base thing, it was awesome. All I had was a car and a motorcycle that turned into a helicopter.

I did not record the themes. Otherwise, I couldn't fit a 22 minute sitcom (usually That 70's Show) in the freespace at the end of the video tape.

Enjoy your concert. Like I said above, hearing any Trek music live is just something else! You have to let us know what you think afterwards.
Of course. :) And sorry, I hadn't noticed your post, even though it's right above mine. Now I'm even more psyched for tonight!

Outside Trek one of my favorite themes is the one used in the original series 'The Prisoner'. Sixties dated but I still love it.
They changed it season to season but the theme from 'Babylon 5' is still great- I forget which season but the one showing how the last best hope for peace was wrong (showing exploding starships with a drumbeat) is awesome.

Season 3, I think, Richard.

There are LOTS of cool sixties themes in the 'spy-fi' genre. The Avengers & The Persuaders are my two favorites!:cool:

I haven't read the entire thread but I will say:

the notion of fast-forwarding through the intro's is blasphemy to me. They are all exquisite [especially VOY & DS9], TNG's opening still gives me goosebumps at times with the overture.

Fast-forwarding it just seems so...impatient to me.

I almost always fast forward, with a few exceptions. I love Enterprise's theme, so I'll usually listen to it. Also, if I'm watching a bunch of episodes in a row (of any of the shows), I might listen to the theme song in the first episode, and then fast forward after that. I also sometimes listen to the TNG theme. But, usually, I fast forward.

One thing I will say, if I sit down to watch a rerun with my mother, she still to this day will recite the "Space, the final frontier" monologue, especially the TNG one!

It's funny, when I used to watch episodes on video or DVD, I'd be skipping the intro, but that was when I was a bit younger and perhaps more self-conscious with either family or housemates living with me. These days during my Netflix bingewatch of TOS and so far up to the start of season four of TNG, I've watched it every damn time. I just love the music so much, so I don't plan on skipping them again, unless it suits me. I mean I feel bad for the poor tortured non-Star-Trek-fan hubby, but he gets me back with anime. :D

The only theme I didn't like was ENT, but I had trouble getting through that show once. I tried to watch it again but I got bored so I stopped. I used to skip that theme.

Oh and now I'm thinking of other series where I didn't skip the credits: Friends, Cheers, Doctor Who, Red Dwarf, Babylon 5, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Scrubs. Probably others too, but those are ones I love.

The VOY theme is subdued, fairly, but I never understood having the necessity for theme music, anyway. Witnessing a USS whatever warping by the camera is nice and all, but we could get another scene of the story in, during that time. For the most part, and I would include TMP/TNG in on this, as well, the themes are mildly annoying. They're too garish. "Oh! But the fans expect it ..."

Nuts to the fans.

I'm not surprised they don't do away with it to get another scene in, but you'd think networks might want to drop them for the sake of more commercial time. I wonder if there's some rule that they have to do it. I recall something about Lucas getting fined for Star Wars by the Director's Guild because of the lack of opening credits. I don't guess that rule still exists in movies anymore as it's pretty common (or maybe they just pay the fine), but I wonder if some such rule exists in TV. I did a quick search and couldn't really find anything about it. Are there any shows that don't have opening credits of any kind even after a cold open? I can't think of any off the top of my head.

I haven't watched them in a while, but I don't think "Gotham" or "Marvel's Agents of Shields" have opening theme as such. Don't they just flash the logo of the show, and go right back to the action?

I've never watched either but it looks like you're right.

It's actually very rare to find a show these days which do have opening credits, it's just "flash the logo and get on with it." I remember Stargate SG-1 made a joke about that, only to have Stargate Universe go ahead and do that.

Granted, there are still a few shows which do have an opening credits sequence, such as The Walking Dead. Although, Fear the Walking Dead doesn't.

It's all about air time, isn't it? They want to cram as much action into what little time they have, because the commercial breaks take away crucial narrative time. So, title sequences feel like a luxury these days. That's longer they could be telling a story. In theory. :p

:D :D :D

I don't mind admitting I'll be disappointed if the new Trek series goes down that path, though. I might be willing to skip the themes from time to time, but a Star Trek show which misses out the opening titles altogether will feel like it's lost something innately 'Star Trek'.

Then again, I'm probably not the "target audience". If ponderous title sequences with an orchestra doing their best Jerry Goldsmith impersonation isn't enough to hook 'the kids' these days, then I'm willing to put title sequences on the block and drop the guillotine. ;)

I'm confident that STAR TREK 2017 will have all of the traditional bells and whistles. Its new format demands that "they" leave nothing to chance. I just wish a series would do without all of the fanfare for once and just get on with it. There may be contractual reasons for it, god forbid the credits not go on for five minutes, straight whilst assaulting our eardrums with pure, unadulterated kitsch. If I were in charge of STAR TREK, though ... I would've $aved that foolishness for the end credits.
