I did notice, while watching something that had some of the trailer clips, it does carry an MPAA rating of PG-13.
I'm sure some other TV movies may carry that, but since it was rated by the MPAA, I would consider it as a movie that way as well.

So, one could have just chosen not to watch the movie as opposed to going through a very odd and convoluted series of steps just to reach the same conclusion.
But then they wouldn't be able to brag about it on the TrekBBS to people who don't actually give a shit what they do.
I accept that it was Star Trek XIV.

Hmm...I never thought of Section 31 as being Star Trek XIV, primarily because it wasn't a theatrical release and wasn't marketed as such. Technically, it could be considered Star Trek XIV, but I guess that depends on how many people will call it that. Going forward, it may be a case that Trek movies will be referred to only by their titles or abbreviations, which many are already doing now (TMP, TWOK, Nemesis, ST09, and so on).
That being said, I do consider S31 to be a Star Trek movie, but more of a Paramount+ exclusive, if that makes any sense.

Though the production value was high and that showed too.
For 12 million the movie looks impressive, I doubt the number, though. 80 million seem much more plausible given the ever growing budgets and the bankable star in the lead.
And of course, strictly speaking Section 31 is a movie, but I understood the question more like if one personally treats it as a valid 14th Star Trek motion picture. And to that I have to say no. It is a tv special.

Well, I don’t consider S31 a Long Trek.
A reason is the length. When the concept of Long Treks was discussed, I thought they would be a full two hours like other streaming movies. But instead, S31 was only 95 minutes in length, for what amounted to a glorified episode of tv. Or, if compared to theatrical Trek movies, only 8 minutes shorter than INS, the shortest theatrical Trek film to date.
But the main reason is the budget.
Figures going around for S31 suggest it cost $50M-$80M to make, and that Yeoh made $12M. That puts it as a midbudget film, possibly at the high end.
Considering that each episode of Kurtzman-era Trek costs around $8M-$10M, it was presumed that a Long Trek would not cost more than $25M-$30M tops to produce. Basically, a midbudget film on the low end, and a quarter of the cost of a season of Kurtzman-era Trek, with slightly better SFX and graphics.
Anything labeled as Star Trtk made by those in charge of Star Trek is Star Trek . Even if it's "Star Trek: Squirrels " and it's 60 minutes of alein Squirrels mating.

I wouldn't have thought this movie was so bad if it weren't for everyone online telling me before it even came out and afterwards that it was bad and deserved to be hated. Similarly I was always partial to Search for Spock in the 1990s before widespread internet until I went online and everyone told me that Wrath of Khan should be my favorite TOS movie. Similarly while I thought that Voyager: Threshold wasn't really that great when I saw it, I only became aware that I was supposed to hate it as the worst Trek episode ever (TM) when I started reading Trek forums.
My point being, views are amplified and there's a huge amount of peer pressure going on telling you to like certain works and hate certain works. I certainly felt it recently when I posted some praise about S31 and got reminded again and again why I was supposed to be wrong.

There are far too many clickbait websites and youtube channels that will echo the commonplace opinions of the most vocal elements of twitter and reddit and just perpetuate that so even a cursory glance to see if any news about anything to do with about the franchise as a whole just bombards you with "10 reasons section 31 is the worst star trek movie" "10 dumbest things in section 31" "section 31 kills star trek streaming movies" "alex kurzman fired" it is impossible to avoid unless one insulates from all news and risks missing out on say a SNW season 3 trailer. It is easy not to take to heart however and just eye roll at the low effort offerings of the internet.
