Siddig's mother is British ( and related to Malcolm McDowell) and he's spent most of his life in Britain, so close enough to being a Brit. As for playing a Brit, he uses an RP accent for Bashir.

And when we see Bashir’s Parents, his Dad has a London accent.

But at least Kahn looked the part, even if his ethnic origin wasn't the same as the one of the character.
What does that even mean?

Khan in "Space Seed" was a (brownfaced) Mexican playing an Indian Sikh as imagined by people who didn't know the first thing about Sikhs - namely that they don't shave or cut their hair. If the episode came out today all hell would break loose.

The actors are though
Not always.

Which leads me to an interesting question: if TAS is canon -- and I see no reason why it wouldn't be -- what's the in-universe explanation for why the crew of the Enterprise spent two years looking like hand-drawn cartoon characters? Transporter malfunction? Warp drive issues? Personal forcefields?

I blame Spectral Inhibitors reducing the range of the colors that can be seen in the Universe to a limited palette.

It was a frustrating time for Reincarnated Bob Ross.

Seems to be some sort of mirror universe.

I'd prefer an Afgan play an Afgan character.

That's not what acting is about. "Acting" means playing people different from you in some respects otherwise it's called a documentary.

Plus who do you propose should play imaginary races? Like people from the Atlantid that we don't even know if it existed?

It means playing people who arent you. Like a Starfleet Captain or a consulting detective. Or a 19th Century Calvery officer or a doctor in a busy urban hospital.

Let's make it simple because we're beating around the bush here:

If you have a choice between an actor that stinks but is Arab and one that's quite good but only looks Arab, which one would you choose to play the part of an Arab?

There are over 380 million Arabic people in the world, why on Earth would this be a real situation?

I vote for Vince Vaughn as next captain of Discovery. That would totally kick ass, the guy has huge range from comedy to drama. He was the best thing about second season of True Detective. He could totally pull of being a captain.
