I wouldn't like the idea of living in a country where it would be mandatory to carry ID around. A bit too "deine papieren bitte" if you know what I mean.
Me either. I'm glad the ID card scheme is going down the toilet... One time I'm glad of Labour's incompetence.
As far as I know, it's a common feeling for British people. I take it as a bit of cultural difference. Personally, I don't think it's a big deal to carry one, but I understand other people may feel differently about it.

Unfortunately, there is always the risk that the person buying alcohol is an undercover cop performing a sting. It happens more often than you'd think, and if you sell the alcohol to them with an expired license, you can get in a ton of trouble.
I don't want to sound unrespectful, but you guys in the US are just crazy about alcohol rules. The 21 years thing is just nonsense. I can understand a big fine for a store stupid enough to sell alcohol to a 12 years old, but jail time for giving a pint to an adult with expired ID? Come on. I think people should let the last traces of Prohibitionism behind them,

Jail time probably wouldn't happen. At worst, you'd probably face a huge fine, and the establishment would lose its liquor license.

Believe me, I think the laws are crazy as well, but that doesn't mean I don't have to follow them.

Irrelevant. An ID that's expired is an ID that does not exist. Once an ID expires, it becomes worthless.

You're not the DMV or a cop. You're simply verifying age. Expired or not, the age doesn't magically reverse. It's one thing if they might be underage and your worried about a sting, it's another if they're obviously old enough.
Law's the law. It isn't like people want the headache of carding everyone, they just don't want to get fucked in the ass by fines, employers, lawsuits, and jobloss and jail time.

One place I worked at, a woman sued the store cause her son that looked over 21 wasn't carded and he bought a beer. Nothing happened, except Jr. puked up in the driveway, but the cashier and the store both got sued and lost.

Uncle Sam requires I carry my green card on my person at all times. Never been asked to produce it though (outside of international flight check-in).

Have taken to leaving it home on dog walks though. Can't lose something I'm not carrying.

I have my ID on me at all times when out of the house - its required of me...

...Unless I go to Ireland/USA/China/Anywhere that doesn't like the UK politically.

At times it's rather ridiculous - I find myself patting my ass (pocket region where I keep in) when in my dressing gown at home subconsciously checking its there and get a bit worried when it isnt...

Hugo - in bed and just looked to the cabinet to check the ID is still there.... phew

Shameless - yeah I know we're all friendlies, but the USA is one of those places we are recommended not to take our ID with us. Just one of those things I've never actually been bothered to figure out why. I'll change that next week.

Technically I see no need to take it any time I leave, but as I have to travel to a UK airport and from a UK airport on return I should have it with me. Though I have heard stories of New York police officers being very welcoming to UK coppers and giving tours of stations/custodies etc. Probably so they can ask them "Are you crazy to do your job without a gun?" ;)

Hugo - Not crazy. Much

Wow, that's strange to hear. Perhaps they're just being a little overly cautious based on rumors or something, because I live in a beach city with a lot of tourism (and close to Disneyland / Knott's Berry Farm) and I've never seen or heard reports of anyone giving UK tourists any trouble for political reasons or otherwise. If anything people are more likely to be friendlier and more curious than usual as a result of finding out you're from the UK.

Honestly, I don't think most Americans give the UK much thought at all. I'd be really surprised if someone was given a hard time because that's where they were from.

I've certainly never heard anyone badmouthing the UK.

I got some stick off a couple of people while in Michigan for being English. But it wasn't exactly serious insults mostly laugh it off kinda stuff.

Michigan is still smarting from that whole surrender of Detroit in 1812 thing. They'll get over it eventually.

Oh, I know, of course you have to follow them. But every time someone mention the 21 years old thing, I cannot help but shake my head. Here in Italy, we don't even have such a law, let alone above voting age.

Three things are always in my wallet and, as they're my Driver's License, my debit card, and my AAA membership card I guess you could say it's always on me since I won't leave home without the wallet.
