As far as I know, it's a common feeling for British people. I take it as a bit of cultural difference. Personally, I don't think it's a big deal to carry one, but I understand other people may feel differently about it.Me either. I'm glad the ID card scheme is going down the toilet... One time I'm glad of Labour's incompetence.I wouldn't like the idea of living in a country where it would be mandatory to carry ID around. A bit too "deine papieren bitte" if you know what I mean.
I don't want to sound unrespectful, but you guys in the US are just crazy about alcohol rules. The 21 years thing is just nonsense. I can understand a big fine for a store stupid enough to sell alcohol to a 12 years old, but jail time for giving a pint to an adult with expired ID? Come on. I think people should let the last traces of Prohibitionism behind them,Unfortunately, there is always the risk that the person buying alcohol is an undercover cop performing a sting. It happens more often than you'd think, and if you sell the alcohol to them with an expired license, you can get in a ton of trouble.
Jail time probably wouldn't happen. At worst, you'd probably face a huge fine, and the establishment would lose its liquor license.I don't want to sound unrespectful, but you guys in the US are just crazy about alcohol rules. Not really, no...I wouldn't like the idea of living in a country where it would be mandatory to carry ID around. A bit too "deine papieren bitte" if you know what I mean.
How about a man-dick? Anyone ever try to ID himself by showing you one of those?
Law's the law. It isn't like people want the headache of carding everyone, they just don't want to get fucked in the ass by fines, employers, lawsuits, and jobloss and jail time.Irrelevant. An ID that's expired is an ID that does not exist. Once an ID expires, it becomes worthless.
You're not the DMV or a cop. You're simply verifying age. Expired or not, the age doesn't magically reverse. It's one thing if they might be underage and your worried about a sting, it's another if they're obviously old enough.
Without turning this into a political thread, the US likes the UK.
I have my ID on me at all times when out of the house - its required of me...
...Unless I go to Ireland/USA/China/Anywhere that doesn't like the UK politically.
Shameless - yeah I know we're all friendlies, but the USA is one of those places we are recommended not to take our ID with us. Just one of those things I've never actually been bothered to figure out why. I'll change that next week.
Honestly, I don't think most Americans give the UK much thought at all. I'd be really surprised if someone was given a hard time because that's where they were from.I have my ID on me at all times when out of the house - its required of me...

Wow, that's strange to hear. Perhaps they're just being a little overly cautious based on rumors or something, because I live in a beach city with a lot of tourism (and close to Disneyland / Knott's Berry Farm) and I've never seen or heard reports of anyone giving UK tourists any trouble for political reasons or otherwise. If anything people are more likely to be friendlier and more curious than usual as a result of finding out you're from the UK.
I got some stick off a couple of people while in Michigan for being English. But it wasn't exactly serious insults mostly laugh it off kinda stuff.Honestly, I don't think most Americans give the UK much thought at all. I've certainly never heard anyone badmouthing the UK.
Oh, I know, of course you have to follow them. But every time someone mention the 21 years old thing, I cannot help but shake my head. Here in Italy, we don't even have such a law, let alone above voting age.Jail time probably wouldn't happen. At worst, you'd probably face a huge fine, and the establishment would lose its liquor license.
Believe me, I think the laws are crazy as well, but that doesn't mean I don't have to follow them.
Kinda like those "You must be THIS tall to ride" signs at carnivals, I suppose. How about a man-dick? Anyone ever try to ID himself by showing you one of those?
How would that count as ID?
