I tend to agree. The writing let a very talented cast down.

I'm having trouble remembering, do we see Amanda that isn't a memory from Burham?

Yep. Seems like with the Spore Drive the universe would've gotten much larger, but instead it is smaller than it has ever been. Overly dependent on what came before.

Got a chance to rewatch "The Vulcan Hello" today.

Some rambling thoughts:

  • Martin-Green definitely showed her acting chops in this one. Very good performance. The acting was mostly top notch.
  • The pacing of the episode was better than I remember.
  • The marble-mouthed Klingons still grate.
  • The new star in the sky line from Sarek makes no sense. Light simply wouldn't travel that fast.
  • Sarek giving Burnham "The Vulcan Hello" simply made no sense. Especially when the episode goes out of its way to show how flustered Burnham gets with Klingons.
  • The writing just wasn't very good. It seems like someone was writing lines for Picard and giving them to Georgiou.
  • Admiral Anderson is/was a douche. It really wasn't necessary.
  • The uniforms would look so much better is they had used the tops with plain black pants.
  • Saru is called both Lieutenant and Commander.
  • Still simply doesn't feel like anything that would've preceded TOS. For some folks, that is unimportant. For me, it is. I think my continued thoughts about it being a different timeline still apply for me.

Actually, while I agreed with Ovation initally, I actually agree with Jedi Marso that (despite enjoying their contributions) older actors would have been better as Frain is only seventeen years older than SMG and Kirshner is only 10 years older, neither of which is ideal, but particularly the later is problematic.

The term reboot implies hitting the reset button and that all previous versions of the character(s) are irrelevant to the current interpretation, think Daniel Craig's James Bond films, Zack Snyder's Superman, and Nolan's Batman films. I could honestly say the J.J. films were reboots of TOS characters and universe, yet these films did try to connect themselves in continuity to Star Trek: Enterprise. I would have to say STD is a reboot since we have new versions of certain characters-Sarek, Amanda, Mudd, Pike, Spock, the universe as a whole in terms of technology level, and events (Federation/Klingon war), new species (Kelpians), planets (Parvho), etc. But for some reason the studio/producers don't want to admit it.

Kirshner is in flashback, and she has aged visibly in real life in the last twenty years or so, so she looks older than she is. Sarek is Vulcan. They can get away with it. Besides, we don’t know when Burnham was adopted.

Different adaptations, not reboots.

No, it is not a reboot.

Moore's Battlestar Gallactica was a reboot. Kelvinverse Trek is a reboot. The various Hulk/Spiderman/Batman reboots are legion.

There is no pre-boot for Burnham, Lorca, Tilly, Saru, Georgiou, Ash, L'Rell, Stamets, or any of them. I guess Sarek & Mudd do, but they are peripheral.

An adaptation is going from one media to another, like novel to small screen or big screen, an adaptation references source material, STD doesn't.
 
I see it as the event happened, but it didn’t go the way according to what is depicted in the show.
It also made more sense. :)

So, it's not a reboot because it has new characters? Didn't BSG add new characters to its line up of old BSG characters like Starbuck, Adama, Colonel Ty, etc. What about Karl Agathon, Sharon, Number six, etc.
