Do you believe in the existence of aliens?

Just curious. I think this is a question that could generate some interesting discussion. It seems logical to me that they would exist. It's a big universe, after all. But I have a hard time believing in things without concrete proof.

For a question like this, I prefer not to think in terms of "belief", one way or the other. I just remain open to the possibility. Life elsewhere or no life elsewhere, either would be pretty mind-blowing when or if the results were in.

That's a multipart answer:

-- Do I believe that there is life elsewhere in the universe? Yes
-- Do I believe that there is life elsewhere in our galaxy? Yes
-- Do I believe that there is life elsewhere in our solar system? Maybe
-- Do I believe that any of these look like the Hollywood aliens we grew up with? No
-- Do I believe any of them are equal to or beyond humanity's current level of development? Maybe, but certainly not within our solar system.
-- Do I believe that we've been visited by aliens? No

Aliens could exist, yes. I'm keeping an open mind about it.

It seems wildly unlikely that they don't, let's put it that way. A vast, infinite universe, and we're the only life? I doubt that very much.

People like to ask how a Christian can also believe in the existence of aliens. Well, I have a few things to say about that. There's nothing in the Bible that says aliens can't exist, I know that much. And if I were to meet aliens right now, it wouldn't destroy my faith or anything like that. It'd be just one more part of the infinite universe that God gave us.

I certainly believe, that there are other life forms, also other "intelligent life forms" in the Universe. Actually I´d find it rather arrogant, to believe, that our planet is the only one out there, that has life crawling about on its crust.
If they where all ready here, if we will ever meet or at least hear something from each other...hmm... the distances are really, really big.... but who knows...

Well said.

In response to the question: Yes, I do believe that there is other sentient life Out There.

Yeah, that pretty much covers it.

well tough question.
I don't believe in aliens so to speak, but i find it highly unlikely that we would be the only sentient civilization in the universe.
And about the technological level of another alien race. Considering that our planet is relatively old and has been able sustain life for quite a while before we came to be. I think an alien race would probably be far beyond our level of technology. on the other hand, without the dark ages, we'd be exploring the galaxy by now.

I want to believe.

Seriously, I think there may be life out there. It would just seem strange if it had only evolved here.

Agreed. We've gotten ourselves into trouble before by assuming divine revelation says things that in fact it never did say.

I have an open mind about it. Many years ago there was a really oustanding discussion on the TrekBBS about this when a member (long gone, I expect) had actually been involved in research into the probability of life on other planets. I suppose it has been lost in the mists of time now but it was absolutely engrossing.

Agreed, except for that last one. I don't know if we have been visited, but I love the theories of ancient astronauts visiting us thousands of years ago and giving us technology to build the pyramids and such.

There is no way of knowing either way, but it's always good to keep an open mind. The universe is vast. I believe that there has to be something out there; however, I doubt it's like anything we could have imagined.

I think that there are a lot of mysteries to our existence and the objects that exist around us. I think we've barely seen the tip of the iceburg on all there is to discover.

Seems, to my completely uneducated mind, more likely than not that in the vastness of the universe there does somewhere exist other lifeforms. So yeah, I guess I do believe in their existence. I just don't believe that they visit Earth in secret in order to mutilate cattle and anally probe rednecks.

Yes, I believe in the existence of aliens, no I don't believe we have ever been in contact with them.
