Do you believe in the existence of aliens?

I would be very surprised if there wasn't extraterrestrial life somewhere in the universe. I would also be very surprised if signs of such life were discovered in my lifetime.

But there are always possibilities, to quote a Trek cliché.

That's a multipart answer:

-- Do I believe that there is life elsewhere in the universe? Yes
-- Do I believe that there is life elsewhere in our galaxy? Yes
-- Do I believe that there is life elsewhere in our solar system? Maybe
-- Do I believe that any of these look like the Hollywood aliens we grew up with? No
-- Do I believe any of them are equal to or beyond humanity's current level of development? Maybe, but certainly not within our solar system.
-- Do I believe that we've been visited by aliens? No

Yeah, that pretty much covers it.

Agreed, except for that last one. I don't know if we have been visited, but I love the theories of ancient astronauts visiting us thousands of years ago and giving us technology to build the pyramids and such.

I dunno, I reckon we probably developed massive massive whip technology by ourselves.

Just curious. I think this is a question that could generate some interesting discussion. It seems logical to me that they would exist. It's a big universe, after all. But I have a hard time believing in things without concrete proof.

There are some 100 billion stars in our galaxy.

There are some 100 billion galaxies in the universe.

Both of these things are facts.

This puts the number of stars in the universe somewhere around 10 sextillion. (a 10 followed by 21 zeroes.)

If only a 10th of a percent of those stars have planets that can support life that leaves 10 quintillion (10 followed by 18 zeroes) possible planets out there with life. Or, rather, a planet for every, single, speck of sand there is on the planet Earth.

Go outside, finde a grain of sand and pick it up. Imagine you're a god picking a planet at random out of the universe. What are the odds of you picking the one grain of sand (planet) with life on it? What are the odds that none of those other grains of sand (planets) have life on them?

There's a lot of "stuff" out there. A lot. We're one planet in possibly several octillion of planets out there (a franction of which can support life, granted.) There's no way in hell we're the only planet to managed to form life. Intelligent life, what kind of life, that is all open for debate but the odds seem to be in favor of there being many thousands if not millions of planets in the universe harboring intelligent life.

Now, is that life coming to earth and jaming things up the asses of rednecks? Doubtful.

But there is life out there.

i believe in extraterrestrial life.

i believe there are probably alien civilisations.

i believe there may well even be aliens out there flying around in starships we couldn't comprehend.

but i'd bet they've not swung by and said hi, either because a) they're too far away, b) they're advanced enough to think we should be left alone to develop our own way, c) they're afriad of us after watching our leaked TV and radio signals from the past 70-odd years or D) they're too busy conquering the rest of the galaxy and we're way down the 'to do list' :P

There ought to be other life somewhere out there, considering the vastness of the universe, but the odds that they are close enough for contact are low. And if so, I wouldn't want contact if they were even closely similar to us.

I´d like contact with them... even when they are evil. I´d better die finally having the answer of one of those burning questions, than dying some other way, not getting such an answer...for dying I must anyway.
And besides we humans have a lot good sides... we are far from perfect and can be terrible, but the good sides are there and very visibel.
So... who knows, maybe our neighbour aliens are nice fellows after all too. *g*

Our own history of technologically advanced explorers encountering indigenous populations would argue against this being a pleasant experience for us. ;)

Do i think Aliens life exist in the universe.....Yes....I have no doubt the Universe is teeming with life.

Do i think they have visited earth.....No......I just don't think the earth has done enough yet to catch the attention of any other life forms out there.

But i could be wrong.

No, aliens don't exist for the simple reason that if they did, then to them we'd be aliens, which is obviously not the case.

On top of that, how could alien life evolve in outer space, which is almost incomprehensibly vast and empty? The odds against two aliens ever meeting to procreate are just about infinite. In contrast, in places like Iowa, Indiana, and Idaho, which are most definitely not in outer space, meeting, dating, and marrying are commonplace activities.

Captain Pedantic's lawyer is on the phone with a C&D Order lest you want a very costly lawsuit on your hands.

I have no doubt the Universe is teeming with single-celled life. I also have no doubt that there are quite a few environments that harbor multi-cellular life. I also have no doubt that there are intelligent, technological life forms out there, but they are very rare indeed.

As others have noted, the word, "believe" in your poll is unfortunate.

Based on what we know, there is a high probability of simple life everywhere. Given the vast numbers, there is a high probability of other intelligent life somewhere. That said, we are still lacking a lot of critical knowledge. We know we are the product of natural selection and that our evolution goes all the way back to single-celled organisms. Unfortunately, we still do not know how non-life becomes life. It sounds like we are closing in on that knowledge but until we actually get there, the statement, "I believe aliens exist," is not rational. We don't have enough knowledge to make such a statement justifiable.

I believe the available evidence strongly suggests that simple life is common in the universe and that intelligent life is rare, but existent.

I wouldn't go so far as to make the positive assertion that we have not been visited by I feel perfectly safe in saying I disbelieve alien visitors make crop circles, mutilate cattle and anally probe rednecks.

I think it's statistically unlikely that we would be alone in the universe or even in our own galaxy. As for any discrete groups of aliens who may be out there, however: nothing personal, but I'll want to see some evidence before I start considering whether or not I believe in your existence.
