From some of the discussions on other message boards I got the impression that Avatar definitely isn't one of those films that only get better with age...

Some of the guys I know, who came back from the theatre "blown away", openly diss it nowadays.

One of my favourite comments from a while back said:

Avatar is a supermodel. Fucking hot now, yes. But ten years later when the looks are gone and her tits are round her knees, no-one's going to want to pay another visit.

These ten years now look like an over-estimate, don't they? I, for one, liked the movie, but for some reason I really don't feel like re-watching, at all.

How do you feel about all this?

Re: Do those who liked Avatar still like it as much as you did a year

Yeah, I've seen it several more times, including the extended version a few months back, and I like it better than I did at first.

The idea that it's going to fade is wishful bullshit; it's the only one of the fantasy movies (and by fantasy I include everything people like to call "science fiction") being cranked out in the last decade that's going to be remembered as mattering to the history of movies in a generation.

Re: Do those who liked Avatar still like it as much as you did a year

I voted the third option. I thought it was average back when I saw it the first time and on multiple viewings since. There really isn't much depth to "Avatar" and we've seen the core of the story many times before. The acting is average at best. The score is great, so are the visual effects for the most part, but overall it's still meh. I guess that is why I'm interested in Cameron's novel whenever it might be published...the back story is much more interesting to me than the actual film.

Re: Do those who liked Avatar still like it as much as you did a year

I doubt I could stand to sit through it again.

Re: Do those who liked Avatar still like it as much as you did a year

I liked it at the time and still do. I saw it at the cinema, rented the first edition and picked up the extended:)

Saying I loved it would be going too far though

No, that would be Lord of the Rings, I believe. Avatar IS going to be remembered though, but only as a movie that started the 3D fad, nothing more.

Oh, what is this, one of those threads where people who didn't like something can once again bitch about how much they didn't like it?

It's a movie, get over it.

I liked it then and I like it now. Can't say I give it much thought on a daily basis, though. Seems unhealthy to be that obsessed with a fucking movie.

Re: Do those who liked Avatar still like it as much as you did a year

I wouldn't say I ever "loved it" but I thought it was an excellent film and still do. I do think it hewed a bit too closely, not just in themes but characters, to a fairly standard rubric, and of course nothing's above some constructive criticism; but really, you could say the same about Star Wars, so there's nothing wrong (and many things right) with a well-executed familiar story that hits all the right beats.

I've yet to rewatch it, but I'm certain it still holds up.

Well in fairness then, the LOTR movies will "only" be remembered as showing the possibilities in (relatively) faithful adaptation and what a decade of love and treasure can accomplish.

Why not?

It's a movie, get over it.
That's what I've been telling them Star Wars purists. Didn't take.

That's what I've been telling them Star Trek purists. Didn't go well either... :alienblush:

Nicely put. LOTR wasn't exactly a game changer, I admit.

Re: Do those who liked Avatar still like it as much as you did a year

In short, yeah.

Saw it three times at the cinema on its original release, and again for the Directors Cut. And just watched it a fifth time a few weeks ago with the Extended Cut on DVD.
I suppose it loses a little something not being in 3D and on the big screen, but I still love it.

Re: Do those who liked Avatar still like it as much as you did a year

I don't see an option for me. I liked it fairly well for what it was back then.........a cool looking popcorn flick......nothing more. I like it about the same now and would still rewatch it occasionally. I like it better than "meh", but I certainly don't "love" it.

Re: Do those who liked Avatar still like it as much as you did a year

Still like it, but still think it was the 3rd best Sci-fi movie of 2009.

Re: Do those who liked Avatar still like it as much as you did a year

Of course. Political correctness may cause people to revise their memories, then deny their great pleasure in a movie that sided with the enemy. Certainly the people with a stick up their ass on a hero betraying his race will never forget to diss it at each and every opportunity.

Shouldn't it be a horse race? Avatar versus Lord of the Rings versus Dark Knight?

Re: Do those who liked Avatar still like it as much as you did a year

It's a pretty movie. I have seen it three times, that's enough. Mainly because in 2D it's about an hour too long. 3D it could be as long as it wants.

Re: Do those who liked Avatar still like it as much as you did a year

I voted "It's always been MEH"
Visuals = A+
Story = D-

Too many Cameron fanboys and lets face it the same mainstream audiences that ate up crap like TF:Revenge of the Fallen with flashy visuals helped make Avatar a success. The only difference between the films is the perceived pedigree of the director imo.

I've literally seen comments akin to the idea "But yeah it just looked so cool, I overlooked the story" or "The visuals helped push me past the weaker story points".

To each their own, I don't own Avatar and never will.

Nope, not even close. Skiffy fans sure like it, though, at least as much as they dislike Avatar.

Here's a fact: the industry doesn't court or follow the tastes of the skiffy crowd. The commercial film industry aims at the heart of the mainstream, buys and uses whatever they can from wherever they want to that end and sf/fantasy fandom is invited to tag along. A big reason that skiffy has dominated big movies for so long is because it's a source of spectacular visuals which require little information or experience to comprehend (in fact, knowing too much often works against the genre). It takes more sophistication to understand a 1950s western film than the Star Wars trilogy.

Oh, what is this, one of those threads where people who didn't like something can once again bitch about how much they didn't like it?

Yep - it's clearly identified as that by the rhetorical fashion in which the question is posed. If you like the movie/TV series/book in question you must expect to be outnumbered in this kind of discussion. It's like sending up the Bat-Signal.

Nah. When the fad itself has worn out its welcome, Avatar will be forgotten along with it. Just another in a long line of false starts.

Re: Do those who liked Avatar still like it as much as you did a year

Liked it then, like it now. I usually don't change my opinion on movies. Odds are if I liked it 20 years ago I'll like it today too.

Re: Do those who liked Avatar still like it as much as you did a year

I thought it was merely okay, and didn't find it particularly impressive, but that could be because I first saw it on TV (in HD, at least) and not in 3D at a theater.
