The part that really is awfully written is the poker scene.
After the final card is out (it was 5 card stud), Wesley has 3 jacks or queens showing on the board (I can't remember which one), he bets, Shelby calls (she later said she only had two pair). It makes absolutely no sense to call in that position because she is definitely beaten by Wesley, who has 3 of a kind on the board, yet she calls anyway. Riker raises with a possible straight, and then Wesley folds, thinking he was beaten. Shelby then says, I only have 2 pair but I have to see that last card. Riker was bluffing and Shelby won the pot. Wesley sinks in his seat because he got outwitted by Riker.
The writers seem to think that being a good poker player simply is bluffing to win a pot.
We are supposed to believe that Shelby had nerves of steel to call down Riker and his bluff and win the chips that really have zero value in real life.
And just forget the fact that Shelby made a terrible play that anyone who had ever played poker before would not have done.
It was awful writing and they made Shelby, at least in my eyes, look like a complete buffoon.
